Text (469) 608-9944Job, Chapter 28
Men dig out silver, gold, iron and bronze from the depths of the earth, but wisdom cannot be found in the land of the living or bought with the gold of Ofir; God alone knows its place, and He tells man that the fear of the Lord is wisdom.
28:1Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it.
28:2Iron is taken out of the earth, and bronze is molten out of the stone.
28:3He sets an end to darkness, and searches out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
28:4The flood breaks out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
28:5As for the earth, out of it comes bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire.
28:6The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it has dust of gold.
28:7There is a path which no fowl knows, and which the vulture’s eye has not seen:
28:8The lion’s whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it.
28:9He puts forth his hand upon the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.
28:10He cuts out rivers among the rocks; and his eye sees every precious thing.
28:11He binds the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid brings he forth to light.
28:12But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
28:13Man knows not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
28:14The depth says, “It is not in me”: and the sea says, “It is not with me.”
28:15It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.
28:16It cannot be valued with the gold of Ofir (Ophir), with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
28:17The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.
28:18No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.
28:19The topaz of Kush (Ethiopia) shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
28:20Whence then comes wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
28:21Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
28:22Destruction and death say, “We have heard the fame thereof with our ears.”
28:23God understands the way thereof, and He knows the place thereof.
28:24For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven;
28:25To make the weight for the winds; and He weighs the waters by measure.
28:26When He made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:
28:27Then did He see it, and declare it; He prepared it, yea, and searched it out.
28:28And unto man He said, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
