Text (469) 608-9944Job, Chapter 22
Elifaz the Temani answers Iyov that his wickedness is great: he has taken pledges, withheld bread and sent widows away empty, and thinks God cannot see; if he returns to the Almighty and receives the Torah from His mouth, he shall be built up and his prayer heard.
22:1Then Elifaz (Eliphaz) the Temani (Temanite) answered and said,
22:2“Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
22:3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that you are righteous? or is it gain to Him that you make your ways perfect?
22:4Will He reprove you for fear of you? will He enter with you into judgment?
22:5Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities infinite?
22:6For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
22:7You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withholden bread from the hungry.
22:8But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
22:9You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
22:10Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you;
22:11Or darkness, that you cannot see; and abundance of waters cover you.
22:12Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
22:13And you say, ‘How does God know? can He judge through the dark cloud?
22:14Thick clouds are a covering to Him, that He sees not; and He walks in the circuit of heaven.’
22:15Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
22:16Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
22:17Which said unto God, ‘Depart from us’: and what can the Almighty do for them?
22:18Yet He filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
22:19The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
22:20Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.
22:21Acquaint now yourself with Him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto you.
22:22Receive, I pray you, the Torah from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.
22:23If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tabernacles.
22:24Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ofir (Ophir) as the stones of the brooks.
22:25Yea, the Almighty shall be your defence, and you shall have plenty of silver.
22:26For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face unto God.
22:27You shall make your prayer unto Him, and He shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.
22:28You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto you: and the light shall shine upon your ways.
22:29When men are cast down, then you shall say, ‘There is lifting up;’ and He shall save the humble person.
22:30He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of your hands.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
