Jeremiah, Chapter 8

The bones of the kings, priests, prophets and people of Yerushalayim are brought out of their graves and spread before the sun and moon; the people hold fast deceit and will not return, the scribes have made the Torah a lie, and the prophet mourns for the hurt of the daughter of his people.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 23 here is 9:1 in most English Bibles.

Bones spread before the sun

8:1At that time, says Hashem, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Yehudah (Judah), and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), out of their graves:

8:2And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

8:3And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, says Hashem of hosts.

A perpetual backsliding

8:4Moreover you shall say unto them, Thus says Hashem; “Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?

8:5Why then is this people of Yerushalayim slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

8:6I hearkened and heard, but they spoke not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, ‘What have I done?’ every one turned to his course, as the horse rushes into the battle.

8:7Yea, the stork in the heaven knows her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but My people know not the judgment of Hashem.

8:8How do you say, ‘We are wise, and the Torah of Hashem is with us’? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

8:9The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of Hashem; and what wisdom is in them?

8:10Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.

8:11For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace;’ when there is no peace.

8:12Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says Hashem.

8:13I will surely consume them, says Hashem: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.”

The snorting of his horses from Dan

8:14Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for Hashem our God has put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Hashem.

8:15We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

8:16The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.

8:17For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, says Hashem.

The prophet mourns for his people

8:18When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

8:19Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not Hashem in Tziyon (Zion)? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked Me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

8:20The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

8:21For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment has taken hold on me.

8:22Is there no balm in Gil’ad (Gilead); is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

8:23Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
