Jeremiah, Chapter 49

Yirmeyahu’s prophecies against the children of Ammon, whose captivity Hashem will bring again; against Edom, which shall become a desolation like Sedom and Amorah; against Damesek; against Kedar and the kingdoms of Chatzor, which Nevuchadretzar shall strike; and against Elam, whose captivity shall be brought again in the latter days.

Concerning the children of Ammon

49:1Concerning the children of Ammon (the Ammonites), thus says Hashem; “Has Israel no sons? has he no heir? why then does their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

49:2Therefore, behold, the days come, says Hashem, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, says Hashem.

49:3Howl, O Cheshbon (Heshbon), for Ai is spoiled: cry, you daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.

49:4Wherefore glory you in the valleys, your flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, ‘Who shall come unto me?’

49:5Behold, I will bring a fear upon you, says the Lord Hashem of hosts, from all those that are about you; and you shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wanders.

49:6And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, says Hashem.”

Concerning Edom

49:7Concerning Edom, thus says Hashem of hosts; “Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

49:8Flee you, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esav (Esau) upon him, the time that I will visit him.

49:9If grapegatherers come to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.

49:10But I have made Esav bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.

49:11Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let your widows trust in Me.”

49:12For thus says Hashem; “Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and are you he that shall altogether go unpunished? you shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it.

49:13For I have sworn by Myself, says Hashem, that Botzrah (Bozrah) shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

49:14I have heard a rumour from Hashem, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, ‘Gather you together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.’

49:15For, lo, I will make you small among the heathen, and despised among men.

49:16Your terribleness has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you that dwell in the clefts of the rock, that hold the height of the hill: though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from thence, says Hashem.

49:17Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

49:18As in the overthrow of Sedom (Sodom) and Amorah (Gomorrah) and the neighbour cities thereof, says Hashem, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

49:19Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Yarden (Jordan) against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like Me? and who will appoint Me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before Me?

49:20Therefore hear the counsel of Hashem, that He has taken against Edom; and His purposes, that He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

49:21The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in Yam Suf (the Red sea).

49:22Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Botzrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.”

Concerning Damesek

49:23Concerning Damesek (Damascus). Chamat (Hamath) is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

49:24Damesek is waxed feeble, and turns herself to flee, and fear has seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.

49:25How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!

49:26Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, says Hashem of hosts.

49:27And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damesek, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.

Concerning Kedar and Chatzor

49:28Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Chatzor (Hazor), which Nevuchadretzar (Nebuchadrezzar) king of Bavel (Babylon) shall strike, thus says Hashem; “Arise you, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east.

49:29Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, ‘Fear is on every side.’

49:30Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O you inhabitants of Chatzor, says Hashem; for Nevuchadretzar king of Bavel has taken counsel against you, and has conceived a purpose against you.

49:31Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwells without care, says Hashem, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.

49:32And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, says Hashem.

49:33And Chatzor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.”

Concerning Elam

49:34The word of Hashem that came to Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Tzidkiyah (Zedekiah) king of Yehudah (Judah), saying,

49:35“Thus says Hashem of hosts; ‘Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

49:36And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

49:37For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them even My fierce anger, says Hashem; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:

49:38And I will set My throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, says Hashem.

49:39But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, says Hashem.’”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
