Text (469) 608-9944Jeremiah, Chapter 46
The word of Hashem against Mitzrayim: the army of Par’oh Necho is routed by the river Perat at Karkemish; Nevuchadretzar king of Bavel will come and strike the land of Mitzrayim, Nof and No; and Hashem tells His servant Ya’akov not to fear, for He will save him and correct him in measure.
46:1The word of Hashem which came to Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) the prophet against the Gentiles;
46:2Against Mitzrayim (Egypt), against the army of Par’oh Necho (Pharaoh-necho) king of Mitzrayim, which was by the river Perat (Euphrates) in Karkemish (Carchemish), which Nevuchadretzar (Nebuchadrezzar) king of Bavel (Babylon) struck in the fourth year of Yehoyakim (Jehoiakim) the son of Yoshiyahu (Josiah) king of Yehudah (Judah).
46:3Order you the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.
46:4Harness the horses; and get up, you horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.
46:5Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, says Hashem.
46:6Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Perat.
46:7Who is this that comes up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers?
46:8Mitzrayim rises up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he says, “I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.”
46:9Come up, you horses; and rage, you chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; Kush (the Ethiopians) and Put (the Libyans), that handle the shield; and the Ludim (Lydians), that handle and bend the bow.
46:10For this is the day of the Lord Hashem of hosts, a day of vengeance, that He may avenge Him of His adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord Hashem of hosts has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Perat.
46:11Go up into Gil’ad (Gilead), and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Mitzrayim: in vain shall you use many medicines; for you shall not be cured.
46:12The nations have heard of your shame, and your cry has filled the land: for the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.
46:13The word that Hashem spoke to Yirmeyahu the prophet, how Nevuchadretzar king of Bavel should come and strike the land of Mitzrayim.
46:14Declare you in Mitzrayim, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Nof (Noph) and in Tachpanches (Tahpanhes): say you, “Stand fast, and prepare you; for the sword shall devour round about you.”
46:15Why are your valiant men swept away? they stood not, because Hashem did drive them.
46:16He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, “Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.”
46:17They did cry there, “Par’oh king of Mitzrayim is but a noise; he has passed the time appointed.”
46:18As I live, says the King, whose name is Hashem of hosts, Surely as Tavor (Tabor) is among the mountains, and as Karmel (Carmel) by the sea, so shall he come.
46:19O you daughter dwelling in Mitzrayim, furnish yourself to go into captivity: for Nof shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.
46:20Mitzrayim is like a very fair heifer, but destruction comes; it comes out of the north.
46:21Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.
46:22The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.
46:23They shall cut down her forest, says Hashem, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.
46:24The daughter of Mitzrayim shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
46:25Hashem of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Par’oh, and Mitzrayim, with their gods, and their kings; even Par’oh, and all them that trust in him:
46:26And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nevuchadretzar king of Bavel, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, says Hashem.”
46:27But fear not you, O My servant Ya’akov (Jacob), and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save you from afar off, and your seed from the land of their captivity; and Ya’akov shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.
46:28Fear you not, O Ya’akov My servant, says Hashem: for I am with you; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven you: but I will not make a full end of you, but correct you in measure; yet will I not leave you wholly unpunished.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
