Jeremiah, Chapter 34

While Nevuchadretzar fights against Yerushalayim, Yirmeyahu tells Tzidkiyahu that the city will be burned and he will go to Bavel, yet die in peace; the people let their Hebrew servants go free and then bring them back, and Hashem proclaims for them a liberty to the sword, the pestilence and the famine.

34:1The word which came unto Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) from Hashem, when Nevuchadretzar (Nebuchadnezzar) king of Bavel (Babylon), and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, and all the people, fought against Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and against all the cities thereof, saying,

34:2“Thus says Hashem, the God of Israel; ‘Go and speak to Tzidkiyahu (Zedekiah) king of Yehudah (Judah), and tell him, “Thus says Hashem; ‘Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Bavel, and he shall burn it with fire:

34:3And you shall not escape out of his hand, but shall surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and your eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Bavel, and he shall speak with you mouth to mouth, and you shall go to Bavel.’

You shall die in peace

34:4Yet hear the word of Hashem, O Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah; Thus says Hashem of you, ‘You shall not die by the sword:

34:5But you shall die in peace: and with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings which were before you, so shall they burn odours for you; and they will lament you, saying, “Ah lord!” for I have pronounced the word, says Hashem.’”’”

34:6Then Yirmeyahu the prophet spoke all these words unto Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah in Yerushalayim,

34:7When the king of Bavel’s army fought against Yerushalayim, and against all the cities of Yehudah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Yehudah.

Liberty proclaimed and taken back

34:8This is the word that came unto Yirmeyahu from Hashem, after that the king Tzidkiyahu had made a covenant with all the people which were at Yerushalayim, to proclaim liberty unto them;

34:9That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother.

34:10Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.

34:11But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

A liberty to the sword

34:12Therefore the word of Hashem came to Yirmeyahu from Hashem, saying,

34:13“Thus says Hashem, the God of Israel; ‘I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), out of the house of bondmen, saying,

34:14“At the end of seven years let you go every man his brother an Hebrew, which has been sold unto you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you:” but your fathers hearkened not unto Me, neither inclined their ear.

34:15And you were now turned, and had done right in My sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and you had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name:

34:16But you turned and polluted My name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.’

34:17Therefore thus says Hashem; ‘You have not hearkened unto Me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, says Hashem, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

34:18And I will give the men that have transgressed My covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before Me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,

34:19The princes of Yehudah, and the princes of Yerushalayim, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf;

34:20I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for food unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.

34:21And Tzidkiyahu king of Yehudah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Bavel’s army, which are gone up from you.

34:22Behold, I will command, says Hashem, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Yehudah a desolation without an inhabitant.’”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
