Text (469) 608-9944Jeremiah, Chapter 27
Hashem tells Yirmeyah to make bonds and yokes and send word to the kings of Edom, Mo’av, Ammon, Tzor and Tzidon that all nations must serve Nevuchadnetzar king of Bavel; Yirmeyah urges Tzidkiyah, the priests and the people not to hear the false prophets, for the vessels left in Hashem’s house will also go to Bavel.
27:1In the beginning of the reign of Yehoyakim (Jehoiakim) the son of Yoshiyahu (Josiah) king of Yehudah (Judah) came this word unto Yirmeyah (Jeremiah) from Hashem, saying,
27:2“Thus says Hashem to me, ‘Make you bonds and yokes, and put them upon your neck,
27:3And send them to the king of Edom, and to the king of Mo’av (Moab), and to the king of the Ammonim (Ammonites), and to the king of Tzor (Tyrus), and to the king of Tzidon (Zidon), by the hand of the messengers which come to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) unto Tzidkiyahu (Zedekiah) king of Yehudah;
27:4And command them to say unto their masters, “Thus says Hashem of hosts, the God of Israel; Thus shall you say unto your masters;
27:5I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto Me.
27:6And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nevuchadnetzar (Nebuchadnezzar) the king of Bavel (Babylon), My servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.
27:7And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.
27:8And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nevuchadnetzar the king of Bavel, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Bavel, that nation will I punish, says Hashem, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.
27:9Therefore hearken not you to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Bavel’:
27:10For they prophesy a lie unto you, to remove you far from your land; and that I should drive you out, and you should perish.
27:11But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Bavel, and serve him, those will I let remain still in their own land, says Hashem; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.”’”
27:12I spoke also to Tzidkiyah king of Yehudah according to all these words, saying, “Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Bavel, and serve him and his people, and live.
27:13Why will you die, you and your people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as Hashem has spoken against the nation that will not serve the king of Bavel?
27:14Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Bavel’: for they prophesy a lie unto you.
27:15For I have not sent them, says Hashem, yet they prophesy a lie in My name; that I might drive you out, and that you might perish, you, and the prophets that prophesy unto you.”
27:16Also I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says Hashem, ‘Hearken not to the words of your prophets that prophesy unto you, saying, “Behold, the vessels of Hashem’s house shall now shortly be brought again from Bavel”: for they prophesy a lie unto you.
27:17Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Bavel, and live: wherefore should this city be laid waste?
27:18But if they be prophets, and if the word of Hashem be with them, let them now make intercession to Hashem of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of Hashem, and in the house of the king of Yehudah, and at Yerushalayim, go not to Bavel.’
27:19For thus says Hashem of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city,
27:20Which Nevuchadnetzar king of Bavel took not, when he carried away captive Yechonyah (Jeconiah) the son of Yehoyakim king of Yehudah from Yerushalayim to Bavel, and all the nobles of Yehudah and Yerushalayim;
27:21Yea, thus says Hashem of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning the vessels that remain in the house of Hashem, and in the house of the king of Yehudah and of Yerushalayim;
27:22‘They shall be carried to Bavel, and there shall they be until the day that I visit them, says Hashem; then will I bring them up, and restore them to this place.’”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
