Text (469) 608-9944Jeremiah, Chapter 24
After Nevuchadretzar carries Yechonyahu and the princes of Yehudah to Bavel, Hashem shows Yirmeyahu two baskets of figs before the temple: the good figs are the captives, whom He will bring back and give a heart to know Him, and the evil figs are Tzidkiyahu and those left in the land.
24:1Hashem showed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of Hashem, after that Nevuchadretzar (Nebuchadrezzar) king of Bavel (Babylon) had carried away captive Yechonyahu (Jeconiah) the son of Yehoyakim (Jehoiakim) king of Yehudah (Judah), and the princes of Yehudah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and had brought them to Bavel.
24:2One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very naughty figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.
24:3Then said Hashem unto me, “What see you, Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah)?” And I said, “Figs; the good figs, very good; and the evil, very evil, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.”
24:4Again the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,
24:5“Thus says Hashem, the God of Israel; ‘Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Yehudah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Kasdim (Chaldeans) for their good.
24:6For I will set My eyes upon them for good, and I will bring them again to this land: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck them up.
24:7And I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am Hashem: and they shall be My people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto Me with their whole heart.
24:8And as the evil figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so evil; surely thus says Hashem, So will I give Tzidkiyahu (Zedekiah) the king of Yehudah, and his princes, and the residue of Yerushalayim, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt):
24:9And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them.
24:10And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.’”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
