Jeremiah, Chapter 12

Yirmeyahu asks Hashem why the way of the wicked prospers, and Hashem answers that worse is to come, even from the prophet’s own brethren; He has forsaken His heritage to the spoilers, and He will pluck up Yehudah’s evil neighbours, then have compassion on them if they learn the ways of His people.

Why does the way of the wicked prosper

12:1Righteous are You, O Hashem, when I plead with You: yet let me talk with You of Your judgments: Wherefore does the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

12:2You have planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: You are near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

12:3But You, O Hashem, know me: You have seen me, and tried my heart toward You: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

12:4How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, “He shall not see our last end.”

Running with horses

12:5If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein you trusted, they wearied you, then how will you do in the swelling of Yarden (Jordan)?

12:6For even your brethren, and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you; yea, they have called a multitude after you: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto you.

Hashem forsakes His heritage

12:7I have forsaken My house, I have left My heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of My soul into the hand of her enemies.

12:8My heritage is unto Me as a lion in the forest; it cries out against Me: therefore have I hated it.

12:9My heritage is unto Me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come you, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.

12:10Many pastors have destroyed My vineyard, they have trodden My portion under foot, they have made My pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.

12:11They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourns unto Me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man lays it to heart.

12:12The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of Hashem shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

12:13They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of Hashem.

The evil neighbours

12:14Thus says Hashem against all My evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused My people Israel to inherit; “Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Yehudah (Judah) from among them.

12:15And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

12:16And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘Hashem lives’; as they taught My people to swear by Ba’al; then shall they be built in the midst of My people.

12:17But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, says Hashem.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Jeremiah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 8 and 9; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
