Isaiah, Chapter 47

Hashem calls the virgin daughter of Bavel, the lady of kingdoms, down from her throne into the dust: she showed His people no mercy and said in her heart that none was beside her, and neither her sorceries nor her astrologers shall save her when evil comes upon her suddenly.

47:1Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Bavel (Babylon), sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Kasdim (Chaldeans): for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.

47:2Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover your locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

47:3Your nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, your shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet you as a man.

47:4As for our redeemer, Hashem of hosts is His name, the Holy One of Israel.

The lady of kingdoms

47:5Sit you silent, and get you into darkness, O daughter of the Kasdim: for you shall no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

47:6I was wroth with My people, I have polluted My inheritance, and given them into your hand: you did show them no mercy; upon the ancient have you very heavily laid your yoke.

47:7And you said, “I shall be a lady for ever”: so that you did not lay these things to your heart, neither did remember the latter end of it.

In a moment, in one day

47:8Therefore hear now this, you that are given to pleasures, that dwell carelessly, that say in your heart, “I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children”:

47:9But these two things shall come to you in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon you in their perfection for the multitude of your sorceries, and for the great abundance of your enchantments.

47:10For you have trusted in your wickedness: you have said, “None sees me.” Your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you; and you have said in your heart, “I am, and none else beside me.”

47:11Therefore shall evil come upon you; you shall not know from whence it rises: and mischief shall fall upon you; you shall not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon you suddenly, which you shall not know.

Sorceries and stargazers

47:12Stand now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries, wherein you have laboured from your youth; if so be you shall be able to profit, if so be you may prevail.

47:13You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save you from these things that shall come upon you.

47:14Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

47:15Thus shall they be unto you with whom you have laboured, even your merchants, from your youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save you.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
