Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 35
The wilderness rejoices and blossoms and sees the glory of Hashem; the fearful are told to be strong, for God will come and save; the blind, deaf, lame and dumb are healed, waters break out in the desert, and the ransomed of Hashem return to Tziyon on the way of holiness with everlasting joy.
35:1The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.
35:2It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Levanon (Lebanon) shall be given unto it, the excellency of Karmel (Carmel) and Sharon, they shall see the glory of Hashem, and the excellency of our God.
35:3Strengthen you the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.
35:4Say to them that are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; He will come and save you.”
35:5Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
35:6Then shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
35:7And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.
35:8And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
35:9No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there:
35:10And the ransomed of Hashem shall return, and come to Tziyon (Zion) with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
