Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 27
Hashem punishes Livyatan the serpent with His great sword; the song of the vineyard that Hashem keeps night and day; Ya’akov takes root and his iniquity is purged while the defenced city lies desolate; and at the great shofar the lost of Ashur and Mitzrayim come to worship in Yerushalayim.
27:1In that day Hashem with His sore and great and strong sword shall punish Livyatan (leviathan) the piercing serpent, even Livyatan that crooked serpent; and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.
27:2In that day sing you unto her, “A vineyard of red wine.
27:3I Hashem do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
27:4Fury is not in Me: who would set the briers and thorns against Me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.
27:5Or let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me.”
27:6He shall cause them that come of Ya’akov (Jacob) to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.
27:7Has He struck him, as He struck those that struck him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by Him?
27:8In measure, when it shoots forth, You will debate with it: He stays His rough wind in the day of the east wind.
27:9By this therefore shall the iniquity of Ya’akov be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he makes all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.
27:10Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.
27:11When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore He that made them will not have mercy on them, and He that formed them will show them no favour.
27:12And it shall come to pass in that day, that Hashem shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and you shall be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel.
27:13And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great shofar (trumpet) shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Ashur (Assyria), and the outcasts in the land of Mitzrayim, and shall worship Hashem in the holy mount at Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
