Isaiah, Chapter 25

Praise to Hashem, who has made a defenced city a ruin and been a strength to the poor; in this mountain Hashem of hosts makes a feast for all people, swallows up death in victory and wipes away tears from all faces, and Mo’av is trodden down.

Praise for wonderful things

25:1O Hashem, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will praise Your name; for You have done wonderful things; Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

25:2For You have made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.

25:3Therefore shall the strong people glorify You, the city of the terrible nations shall fear You.

25:4For You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

25:5You shall bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

A feast in this mountain

25:6And in this mountain shall Hashem of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

25:7And He will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations.

25:8He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord Hashem will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for Hashem has spoken it.

25:9And it shall be said in that day, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is Hashem; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.”

Mo’av trodden down

25:10For in this mountain shall the hand of Hashem rest, and Mo’av (Moab) shall be trodden down under Him, even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.

25:11And He shall spread forth His hands in the midst of them, as he that swims spreads forth his hands to swim: and He shall bring down their pride together with the spoils of their hands.

25:12And the fortress of the high fort of your walls shall He bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
