Isaiah, Chapter 21

The burden of the desert of the sea, where a watchman set by the Lord sees chariots and cries that Bavel is fallen; the burden of Dumah, where one calls to the watchman out of Se’ir; and the burden upon Arav, where Tema brings bread to those who flee and the glory of Kedar shall fail.

The burden of the desert of the sea

21:1The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it comes from the desert, from a terrible land.

21:2A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer deals treacherously, and the spoiler spoils. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Madai (Media); all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.

21:3Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travails: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

21:4My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure has he turned into fear unto me.

21:5Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, you princes, and anoint the shield.

The watchman on the watchtower

21:6For thus has the Lord said unto me, “Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he sees.”

21:7And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of donkeys, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:

21:8And he cried, “A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:

21:9And, behold, here comes a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen.” And he answered and said, “Bavel (Babylon) is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he has broken unto the ground.”

21:10O my threshing, and the grain of my floor: that which I have heard of Hashem of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.

The burden of Dumah

21:11The burden of Dumah. He calls to me out of Se’ir (Seir), “Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?”

21:12The watchman said, “The morning comes, and also the night: if you will inquire, inquire you: return, come.”

The burden upon Arav

21:13The burden upon Arav (Arabia). In the forest in Arav shall you lodge, O you travelling companies of Dedanim.

21:14The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they met with their bread him that fled.

21:15For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.

21:16For thus has the Lord said unto me, “Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:

21:17And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children of Kedar, shall be diminished: for Hashem God of Israel has spoken it.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
