Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 19
The burden of Mitzrayim: Hashem comes upon a swift cloud, Mitzrayim fights within itself and is given to a cruel lord, its rivers dry up and the princes of Tzo’an and Nof are fools; in that day there is an altar to Hashem in Mitzrayim, and a highway joins Mitzrayim, Ashur and Israel in blessing.
19:1The burden of Mitzrayim (Egypt). Behold, Hashem rides upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Mitzrayim: and the idols of Mitzrayim shall be moved at His presence, and the heart of Mitzrayim shall melt in the midst of it.
19:2And I will set Mitzrayim against Mitzrayim: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
19:3And the spirit of Mitzrayim shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
19:4And Mitzrayim will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, says the Lord, Hashem of hosts.
19:5And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
19:6And they shall turn the rivers far away; and the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up: the reeds and flags shall wither.
19:7The paper reeds by the brooks, by the mouth of the brooks, and every thing sown by the brooks, shall wither, be driven away, and be no more.
19:8The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish.
19:9Moreover they that work in fine flax, and they that weave networks, shall be confounded.
19:10And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
19:11Surely the princes of Tzo’an (Zoan) are fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Par’oh (Pharaoh) is become brutish: how say you unto Par’oh, “I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings”?
19:12Where are they? where are your wise men? and let them tell you now, and let them know what Hashem of hosts has purposed upon Mitzrayim.
19:13The princes of Tzo’an are become fools, the princes of Nof (Noph) are deceived; they have also seduced Mitzrayim, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof.
19:14Hashem has mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Mitzrayim to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
19:15Neither shall there be any work for Mitzrayim, which the head or tail, branch or rush, may do.
19:16In that day shall Mitzrayim be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of Hashem of hosts, which He shakes over it.
19:17And the land of Yehudah (Judah) shall be a terror unto Mitzrayim, every one that makes mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of Hashem of hosts, which He has determined against it.
19:18In that day shall five cities in the land of Mitzrayim speak the language of Kena’an (Canaan), and swear to Hashem of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.
19:19In that day shall there be an altar to Hashem in the midst of the land of Mitzrayim, and a pillar at the border thereof to Hashem.
19:20And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto Hashem of hosts in the land of Mitzrayim: for they shall cry unto Hashem because of the oppressors, and He shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
19:21And Hashem shall be known to Mitzrayim, and Mitzrayim shall know Hashem in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto Hashem, and perform it.
19:22And Hashem shall strike Mitzrayim: He shall strike and heal it: and they shall return even to Hashem, and He shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them.
19:23In that day shall there be a highway out of Mitzrayim to Ashur (Assyria), and Ashur shall come into Mitzrayim, and Mitzrayim into Ashur, and Mitzrayim shall serve with Ashur.
19:24In that day shall Israel be the third with Mitzrayim and with Ashur, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
19:25Whom Hashem of hosts shall bless, saying, “Blessed be Mitzrayim My people, and Ashur the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
