Tenakh Study · Hosea 12:1–15

Hosea, Chapter 12

Efrayim compasses Hashem with lies and makes a covenant with Ashur; Hashem recalls Ya’akov, who took his brother by the heel, prevailed over the angel and was found at Beit El, calls Israel to return to its God, and answers Efrayim’s boast of riches with Mitzrayim and the prophets.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 11:12 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–15 here are 12:1–14 in most English Bibles.

12:1Efrayim (Ephraim) compasses Me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Yehudah (Judah) yet rules with God, and is faithful with the saints.

12:2Efrayim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with Ashur (the Assyrians), and oil is carried into Mitzrayim (Egypt).

Ya’akov at Beit El

12:3Hashem has also a controversy with Yehudah, and will punish Ya’akov (Jacob) according to his ways; according to his doings will He recompense him.

12:4He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:

12:5Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Beit El (Bethel), and there he spoke with us;

12:6Even Hashem God of hosts; Hashem is His memorial.

12:7Therefore turn you to your God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on your God continually.

Efrayim’s boast

12:8He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.

12:9And Efrayim said, “Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.”

12:10And I that am Hashem your God from the land of Mitzrayim will yet make you to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.

12:11I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.

12:12Is there iniquity in Gil’ad (Gilead)? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.

By a prophet

12:13And Ya’akov fled into the country of Aram (Syria), and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.

12:14And by a prophet Hashem brought Israel out of Mitzrayim, and by a prophet was he preserved.

12:15Efrayim provoked Him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall He leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Hosea they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1, 2, 11, 12, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
