Text (469) 608-9944Ezekiel, Chapter 21
Hashem kindles a fire in the forest of the south and draws His sword against Yerushalayim and the land of Israel; the sword is sharpened and furbished, the king of Bavel divines at the parting of the way, the crown is taken from the wicked prince of Israel, and the sword is drawn against the Ammonim.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–5 here are 20:45–49 in most English Bibles. Verses 6–37 here are 21:1–32 in most English Bibles.
21:1Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,
21:2“Son of man, set your face toward the south, and drop your word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;
21:3And say to the forest of the south, ‘Hear the word of Hashem; Thus says the Lord Hashem, “Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
21:4And all flesh shall see that I Hashem have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.”’”
21:5Then said I, “Ah Lord Hashem! they say of me, ‘Does he not speak parables?’”
21:6And the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,
21:7“Son of man, set your face toward Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and drop your word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel,
21:8And say to the land of Israel, ‘Thus says Hashem, “Behold, I am against you, and will draw forth My sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked.
21:9Seeing then that I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall My sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:
21:10That all flesh may know that I Hashem have drawn forth My sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more.”’
21:11Sigh therefore, you son of man, with the breaking of your loins; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes.
21:12And it shall be, when they say unto you, ‘Wherefore sigh you?’ that you shall answer, ‘For the tidings; because it comes’: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it comes, and shall be brought to pass, says the Lord Hashem.”
21:13Again the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,
21:14“Son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord; Say, “A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished:
21:15It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemns the rod of My son, as every tree.
21:16And he has given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer.”’
21:17Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon My people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon My people: strike therefore upon your thigh.
21:18Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, says the Lord Hashem.
21:19You therefore, son of man, prophesy, and strike your hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which enters into their privy chambers.
21:20I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter.
21:21Go you one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, whithersoever your face is set.
21:22I will also strike My hands together, and I will cause My fury to rest: I Hashem have said it.”
21:23The word of Hashem came unto me again, saying,
21:24“Also, you son of man, appoint you two ways, that the sword of the king of Bavel (Babylon) may come: both twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose you a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city.
21:25Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbat (Rabbath) of the Ammonim (Ammonites), and to Yehudah (Judah) in Yerushalayim the defenced.
21:26For the king of Bavel stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver.
21:27At his right hand was the divination for Yerushalayim, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort.
21:28And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken.
21:29Therefore thus says the Lord Hashem, ‘Because you have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that you are come to remembrance, you shall be taken with the hand.’
21:30And you, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end,
21:31Thus says the Lord Hashem, ‘Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high.
21:32I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him.’
21:33And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord Hashem concerning the Ammonim, and concerning their reproach; even say you, “The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering:
21:34Whiles they see vanity unto you, whiles they divine a lie unto you, to bring you upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.
21:35Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge you in the place where you were created, in the land of your nativity.
21:36And I will pour out My indignation upon you, I will blow against you in the fire of My wrath, and deliver you into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy.

21:37You shall be for fuel to the fire; your blood shall be in the midst of the land; you shall be no more remembered: for I Hashem have spoken it.”’”

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Ezekiel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 20 and 21; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
