Text (469) 608-9944Ezekiel, Chapter 19
A lamentation for the princes of Israel: the lioness whose young lions are taken in a pit, one brought in chains to Mitzrayim and the other to the king of Bavel; and the mother like a fruitful vine, plucked up in fury and planted in the wilderness, with no strong rod left to rule.
19:1Moreover take you up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,
19:2And say, “What is your mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions.
19:3And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men.
19:4The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
19:5Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion.
19:6And he went up and down among the lions, he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey, and devoured men.
19:7And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring.
19:8Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him: he was taken in their pit.
19:9And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Bavel (Babylon): they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
19:10Your mother is like a vine in your blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.
19:11And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bore rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches.
19:12But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them.
19:13And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground.
19:14And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which has devoured her fruit, so that she has no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule.” This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Ezekiel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 20 and 21; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
