Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 4
Hashem gives Moshe the signs of the rod, the leprous hand and the water turned to blood, appoints Aharon as his spokesman and sends him back to Mitzrayim; on the way Tzipporah circumcises her son, and Moshe and Aharon show the signs to the people, who believe.
4:1And Moshe (Moses) answered and said, “But, behold, they will not believe me, nor listen unto my voice; for they will say, Hashem has not appeared unto you.”
4:2And Hashem said unto him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A rod.”
4:3And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moshe fled from before it.
4:4And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Put forth your hand, and take it by the tail.” And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand;
4:5“that they may believe that Hashem, the God of their fathers, the God of Avraham (Abraham), the God of Yitzḥak (Isaac), and the God of Yaakov (Jacob), has appeared unto you.”
4:6And Hashem said furthermore unto him, “Put now your hand into your bosom.” And he put his hand into his bosom; and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.
4:7And He said, “Put your hand into your bosom again.” And he put his hand into his bosom again; and took it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.
4:8“And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe you, nor listen to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.
4:9And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, nor listen unto your voice, that you shall take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land; and the water which you take out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.”
4:10And Moshe said unto Hashem, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before, nor since You have spoken unto Your servant; but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”
4:11And Hashem said unto him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Is it not I, Hashem?
4:12Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall say.”
4:13And he said, “O my Lord, send, I pray You, by the hand of him whom You will send.”
4:14And the anger of Hashem was kindled against Moshe, and He said, “Is not Aharon (Aaron) the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he comes forth to meet you; and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
4:15And you shall speak unto him, and put the words in his mouth; and I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do.
4:16And he shall be your spokesman unto the people; and it shall come to pass that he shall be to you instead of a mouth, and you shall be to him instead of God.
4:17And you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do the signs.”
4:18And Moshe went and returned to Yeter (Jethro) his father-in-law, and said unto him, “Let me go, I pray you, and return unto my brothers who are in Mitzrayim (Egypt), and see whether they are yet alive.” And Yitro (Jethro) said to Moshe, “Go in peace.”
4:19And Hashem said unto Moshe in Midyan (Midian), “Go, return into Mitzrayim; for all the men are dead who sought your life.”
4:20And Moshe took his wife and his sons, and set them upon a donkey, and he returned to the land of Mitzrayim; and Moshe took the rod of God in his hand.
4:21And Hashem said unto Moshe, “When you go to return into Mitzrayim, see that you do all those wonders before Par’oh (Pharaoh), which I have put in your hand; but I will harden his heart, and he will not let the people go.
4:22And you shall say unto Par’oh, Thus says Hashem: Yisrael (Israel) is My son, My firstborn;
4:23and I say unto you, Let My son go, that he may serve Me; and if you refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay your son, your firstborn.”
4:24And it came to pass on the way, at the lodging place, that Hashem met him, and sought to kill him.
4:25Then Tzipporah (Zipporah) took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, “Surely a bridegroom of blood are you to me.”
4:26So He let him go. Then she said, “A bridegroom of blood, because of the circumcision.”
4:27And Hashem said to Aharon, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moshe.” And he went, and met him at the mountain of God, and kissed him.
4:28And Moshe told Aharon all the words of Hashem who had sent him, and all the signs which He had commanded him.
4:29And Moshe and Aharon went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Yisrael;
4:30and Aharon spoke all the words which Hashem had spoken unto Moshe, and did the signs in the sight of the people.
4:31And the people believed; and when they heard that Hashem had visited the children of Yisrael, and that He had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
