Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 30
Instructions for the golden altar of incense, the half shekel each man gives as a ransom when Yisrael is numbered, the laver of brass where Aharon and his sons wash, the holy anointing oil for the tabernacle and the priests, and the holy incense that no one may make for himself.
30:1“And you shall make an altar to burn incense upon: of acacia wood shall you make it.
30:2A cubit shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof; foursquare shall it be: and two cubits shall be the height thereof: the horns thereof shall be of the same.
30:3And you shall overlay it with pure gold, the top thereof, and the sides thereof round about, and the horns thereof; and you shall make unto it a crown of gold round about.
30:4And two golden rings shall you make to it under the crown of it, by the two corners thereof, upon the two sides of it shall you make it; and they shall be for places for the poles to bear it with.
30:5And you shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold.
30:6And you shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you.
30:7And Aharon shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresses the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.
30:8And when Aharon lights the lamps at evening, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before Hashem throughout your generations.
30:9You shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meal offering; neither shall you pour drink offering thereon.
30:10And Aharon shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonements: once in the year shall he make atonement upon it throughout your generations: it is most holy unto Hashem.”
30:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,
30:12“When you take the sum of the children of Yisrael (Israel) according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto Hashem, when you number them; that there be no plague among them, when you number them.
30:13This they shall give, every one that passes among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary (a shekel is twenty gerahs); a half shekel shall be the offering of Hashem.
30:14Every one that passes among them that are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering unto Hashem.
30:15The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto Hashem, to make an atonement for your souls.
30:16And you shall take the atonement money of the children of Yisrael, and shall appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Yisrael before Hashem, to make an atonement for your souls.”
30:17And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
30:18“You shall also make a laver of brass, and its base also of brass, to wash with; and you shall put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and you shall put water therein.
30:19For Aharon (Aaron) and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:
30:20when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn an offering made by fire unto Hashem:
30:21so they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not; and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.”
30:22Moreover Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
30:23“Take also unto yourself principal spices: of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,
30:24and of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin.
30:25And you shall make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compounded after the art of the apothecary; it shall be a holy anointing oil.
30:26And you shall anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony,
30:27and the table and all its vessels, and the candlestick and its vessels, and the altar of incense,

30:28and the altar of burnt offering with all its vessels, and the laver and its base.
30:29And you shall sanctify them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy.
30:30And you shall anoint Aharon and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto Me in the priest’s office.
30:31And you shall speak unto the children of Yisrael, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil unto Me throughout your generations.
30:32Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall you make any other like it, after the composition of it; it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you.
30:33Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people.’”

30:34And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Take unto yourself sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense; of each shall there be a like weight.
30:35And you shall make of it incense, a compound after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy.
30:36And you shall beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with you; it shall be unto you most holy.

30:37And as for the incense which you shall make, you shall not make for yourselves according to the composition thereof; it shall be unto you holy for Hashem.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
