Exodus, Chapter 13

Hashem commands that every firstborn be sanctified to Him; Moshe tells the people to remember the day they came out, keep the feast of unleavened bread and redeem the firstborn; God leads them by the wilderness way, Moshe takes Yosef’s bones, and Hashem goes before them in a pillar of cloud and fire.

Sanctify the firstborn

13:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

13:2“Sanctify unto Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Yisrael (Israel), both of man and of beast: it is Mine.”

Remember this day

13:3And Moshe said unto the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out from Mitzrayim (Egypt), out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Hashem brought you out from this place; there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

13:4This day you came out in the month Aviv (Abib).

13:5And it shall be when Hashem shall bring you into the land of the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and the Ḥitti (Hittites), and the Emori (Amorites), and the Ḥivi (Hivites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites), which He swore unto your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, that you shall keep this service in this month.

13:6Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day shall be a feast to Hashem.

13:7Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with you, neither shall there be leaven seen with you in all your borders.

13:8And you shall show your son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which Hashem did unto me when I came forth out of Mitzrayim.

13:9And it shall be for a sign unto you upon your hand, and for a memorial between your eyes, that Hashem’s law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand has Hashem brought you out of Mitzrayim.

13:10You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year.

The redemption of the firstborn

13:11And it shall be when Hashem shall bring you into the land of the Kena’ani, as He swore unto you and to your fathers, and shall give it to you,

13:12that you shall set apart unto Hashem all that opens the womb, and every firstling that comes of a beast which you have; the males shall be Hashem’s.

13:13And every firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and all the firstborn of man among your children shall you redeem.

13:14And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, What is this? that you shall say unto him, By strength of hand Hashem brought us out from Mitzrayim, from the house of bondage;

13:15and it came to pass, when Par’oh (Pharaoh) would hardly let us go, that Hashem slew all the firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast; therefore I sacrifice to Hashem all that opens the womb, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.

13:16And it shall be for a sign upon your hand, and for frontlets between your eyes; for by strength of hand Hashem brought us forth out of Mitzrayim.”

The way of the wilderness

13:17And it came to pass, when Par’oh had let the people go, that God did not lead them through the way of the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines), although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people repent when they see war, and they return to Mitzrayim.”

13:18But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Yam Suf (Red Sea); and the children of Yisrael went up armed out of the land of Mitzrayim.

13:19And Moshe (Moses) took the bones of Yosef (Joseph) with him; for he had strictly sworn the children of Yisrael, saying, “God will surely visit you; and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.”

13:20And they took their journey from Sukkot (Succoth), and encamped in Etam (Etham), at the edge of the wilderness.

The pillar of cloud and fire

13:21And Hashem went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.

13:22He did not take away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
