Ecclesiastes, Chapter 1

Kohelet, son of David and king in Yerushalayim, declares that all is vanity: generations pass, the sun, wind and rivers go round, and there is no new thing under the sun; he sought out wisdom and found it vexation of spirit and much grief.

1:1The words of Kohelet (the Preacher), the son of David, king in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

All is vanity

1:2Vanity of vanities, says Kohelet, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

1:3What profit has a man of all his labour which he takes under the sun?

1:4One generation passes away, and another generation comes: but the earth abides for ever.

1:5The sun also arises, and the sun goes down, and hastes to his place where he arose.

1:6The wind goes toward the south, and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to his circuits.

1:7All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

1:8All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

1:9The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

1:10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, “See, this is new”? it has been already of old time, which was before us.

1:11There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Kohelet seeks out wisdom

1:12I Kohelet was king over Israel in Yerushalayim.

1:13And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail has God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

1:14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

1:15That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

1:16I communed with my own heart, saying, “Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Yerushalayim: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”

1:17And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

1:18For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Ecclesiastes they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
