Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 34
Moshe goes up from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo and Hashem shows him the land; Moshe dies there, is buried in an unknown grave, and is mourned thirty days; Yehoshua leads the people, and no prophet has arisen in Yisrael like Moshe.
34:1And Moshe (Moses) went up from the plains of Moav (Moab) unto Mount Nevo (Nebo), to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Yeriḥo (Jericho). And Hashem showed him all the land of Gil’ad (Gilead), unto Dan,
34:2and all Naftali (Naphtali), and the land of Efrayim (Ephraim), and Menasheh (Manasseh), and all the land of Yehudah (Judah), unto the utmost sea,
34:3and the south, and the plain of the valley of Yeriḥo, the city of palm trees, unto Tzo’ar (Zoar).
34:4And Hashem said unto him, “This is the land which I swore unto Avraham (Abraham), unto Yitzḥak (Isaac), and unto Yaakov (Jacob), saying, ‘I will give it unto your seed’: I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”
34:5So Moshe the servant of Hashem died there in the land of Moav, according to the word of Hashem.
34:6And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moav, opposite Beit Pe’or (Beth-peor): but no man knows of his grave unto this day.
34:7And Moshe was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.
34:8And the children of Yisrael (Israel) wept for Moshe in the plains of Moav thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moshe were ended.
34:9And Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moshe had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Yisrael listened unto him, and did as Hashem commanded Moshe.
34:10And there arose not a prophet since in Yisrael like unto Moshe, whom Hashem knew face to face,
34:11in all the signs and the wonders, which Hashem sent him to do in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
34:12and in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moshe showed in the sight of all Yisrael.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
