Deuteronomy, Chapter 32

The song of Moshe: heaven and earth are called to hear of the Rock, His care for Yaakov in the wilderness, Yeshurun’s rebellion, the judgments Hashem sends, and His vengeance on His enemies; Moshe urges the people to keep the Torah, and Hashem sends him up Mount Nevo to see the land and die.

Give ear, O heavens

32:1Give ear, O you heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

32:2My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass,

32:3because I will proclaim the name of Hashem: ascribe greatness unto our God.

32:4He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are judgment: a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is He.

32:5They have corrupted themselves; their blemish is not that of His children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.

32:6Do you thus repay Hashem, O foolish people and unwise? Is not He your father that has bought you? Has He not made you, and established you?

Hashem’s care for Yaakov

32:7Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

32:8When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam (Mankind), He set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the children of Yisrael (Israel).

32:9For Hashem’s portion is His people; Yaakov (Jacob) is the lot of His inheritance.

32:10He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye.

32:11As an eagle stirs up her nest, hovers over her young, spreads abroad her wings, takes them, bears them on her wings,

32:12so Hashem alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

32:13He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and He made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock;

Written and read. Written במותי, read בָּ֣מֳתֵי. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

32:14curds of cows, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat; and you drank the pure blood of the grape.

Yeshurun grows fat

32:15But Yeshurun (Jeshurun) grew fat, and kicked: you have grown fat, you have grown thick, you are covered with fatness; then he forsook God who made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

32:16They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations they provoked Him to anger.

32:17They sacrificed unto demons, not to God; to gods whom they did not know, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers did not fear.

32:18Of the Rock that begot you, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God that formed you.

32:19And when Hashem saw it, He abhorred them, because of the provoking of His sons, and of His daughters.

32:20And He said, “I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

32:21They have moved Me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked Me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

32:22For a fire is kindled in My anger, and shall burn unto the lowest Sheol, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

32:23I will heap evils upon them; I will spend My arrows upon them.

32:24They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction; I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of crawling things of the dust.

32:25The sword outside, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

32:26I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men,

32:27were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should misjudge, lest they should say, ‘Our hand is high, and Hashem has not done all this.’”

32:28For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

32:29O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

32:30How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and Hashem had shut them up?

32:31For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

32:32For their vine is of the vine of Sedom (Sodom), and of the fields of Amorah (Gomorrah): their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter;

32:33their wine is the poison of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps.

32:34“Is not this laid up in store with Me, and sealed up among My treasures?

32:35To Me belongs vengeance, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slide; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.”

Hashem avenges his people

32:36For Hashem shall judge His people, and repent Himself for His servants, when He sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up or left.

32:37And He shall say, “Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

32:38who ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

32:39See now that I, even I, am He, and there is no god with Me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; neither is there any that can deliver out of My hand.

32:40For I lift up My hand to heaven, and say, As I live for ever,

32:41if I whet My glittering sword, and My hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to My enemies, and will repay them that hate Me.

32:42I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.”

32:43Rejoice, O you nations, with His people; for He will avenge the blood of His servants, and will render vengeance to His adversaries, and will make atonement for His land, and for His people.

It is your life

32:44And Moshe (Moses) came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea (Oshea) the son of Nun.

32:45And Moshe made an end of speaking all these words to all Yisrael;

32:46and he said unto them, “Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify against you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this Torah.

32:47For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Yarden (Jordan) to possess it.”

Moshe sent up mount Nevo

32:48And Hashem spoke unto Moshe that selfsame day, saying,

32:49“Get up into this mountain of Avarim (Abarim), unto Mount Nevo (Nebo), which is in the land of Moav (Moab), that is opposite Yeriḥo (Jericho); and behold the land of Kena’an (Canaan), which I give unto the children of Yisrael for a possession;

32:50and die on the mountain where you go up, and be gathered unto your people; as Aharon (Aaron) your brother died on Mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people;

32:51because you trespassed against Me among the children of Yisrael at the waters of Merivat Kadesh (Meribah-Kadesh), in the wilderness of Tzin (Zin); because you did not sanctify Me in the midst of the children of Yisrael.

32:52For you shall see the land before you; but you shall not go there unto the land which I give the children of Yisrael.”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
