Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 24
Laws on divorce and remarriage, the newly married man freed from war, millstones in pledge, kidnapping, the plague of leprosy, entering a borrower’s house for a pledge, paying the poor hired servant, each man dying for his own sin, justice for the stranger, and gleanings for the poor.
24:1When a man has taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favor in his eyes, because he has found some uncleanness in her, then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
24:2And when she has departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife.
24:3And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, who took her to be his wife,
24:4her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before Hashem; and you shall not cause the land to sin, which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance.
24:5When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business; but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife whom he has taken.
24:6No man shall take the lower or the upper millstone in pledge; for he takes a man’s life in pledge.
24:7If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Yisrael (Israel), and deals with him as a slave, or sells him, then that thief shall die; and you shall put away the evil from among you.
24:8Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that you observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levi’im (Levites) shall teach you; as I commanded them, so you shall observe to do.
24:9Remember what Hashem your God did unto Miriam by the way, after you came forth out of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
24:10When you lend your brother anything, you shall not go into his house to fetch his pledge.
24:11You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring out the pledge unto you outside.
24:12And if the man be poor, you shall not sleep with his pledge;
24:13you shall surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garment, and bless you; and it shall be righteousness unto you before Hashem your God.
24:14You shall not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of your brethren, or of your strangers that are in your land within your gates.
24:15In his day you shall give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it; lest he cry against you unto Hashem, and it be sin unto you.
24:16The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
24:17You shall not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow’s garment in pledge;
24:18but you shall remember that you were a bondman in Mitzrayim, and Hashem your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.
24:19When you cut down your harvest in your field, and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to fetch it; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow; that Hashem your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
24:20When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
24:21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
24:22And you shall remember that you were a bondman in the land of Mitzrayim; therefore I command you to do this thing.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
