Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 14
Moshe forbids cutting oneself for the dead, lists the beasts, fish and birds Yisrael may and may not eat, forbids what dies of itself and boiling a kid in its mother’s milk, and commands the yearly tithe eaten before Hashem and the third-year tithe for the Levite, stranger, fatherless and widow.
14:1You are the children of Hashem your God; you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.
14:2For you are a holy people unto Hashem your God, and Hashem has chosen you to be a peculiar people unto Himself, above all the peoples that are upon the face of the earth.
14:3You shall not eat any abominable thing.
14:4These are the beasts which you shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat,
14:5the hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois.
14:6And every beast that parts the hoof, and cleaves the cleft into two claws, and chews the cud among the beasts, that you shall eat.
14:7Nevertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those that divide the cloven hoof: the camel, and the hare, and the coney; for they chew the cud, but do not divide the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.
14:8And the swine, because it divides the hoof, yet does not chew the cud, it is unclean unto you; you shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass.
14:9These you shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales you shall eat;
14:10and whatever does not have fins and scales you may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
14:11Of all clean birds you shall eat.
14:12But these are they of which you shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey,
14:13and the glede, and the kite, and the vulture after its kind,
14:14and every raven after its kind,
14:15and the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after its kind,
14:16the little owl, and the great owl, and the swan,
14:17and the pelican, and the gier eagle, and the cormorant,
14:18and the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.
14:19And every creeping thing that flies is unclean unto you; they shall not be eaten.
14:20But of all clean fowls you may eat.
14:21You shall not eat of anything that dies of itself; you shall give it unto the stranger that is within your gates, that he may eat it; or you may sell it unto a foreigner; for you are a holy people unto Hashem your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.
14:22You shall surely tithe all the increase of your seed, that the field brings forth year by year.
14:23And you shall eat before Hashem your God, in the place which He shall choose to cause His name to dwell there, the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks, that you may learn to fear Hashem your God always.
14:24And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it, or if the place is too far from you, which Hashem your God shall choose to set His name there, when Hashem your God has blessed you,
14:25then you shall turn it into money, and bind up the money in your hand, and shall go unto the place which Hashem your God shall choose;
14:26and you shall spend that money for whatever your soul desires, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatever your soul desires; and you shall eat there before Hashem your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.
14:27And the Levite that is within your gates, you shall not forsake him; for he has no portion nor inheritance with you.
14:28At the end of three years you shall bring forth all the tithe of your increase in that year, and shall lay it up within your gates;
14:29and the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Hashem your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
