Text (469) 608-9944Daniel, Chapter 9
In the first year of Daryavesh, Daniyel understands from the books that the desolations of Yerushalayim will last seventy years; he prays to Hashem with fasting, confessing the sins of Israel and asking mercy for the city, and Gavri’el comes to tell him of the seventy weeks.
9:1In the first year of Daryavesh (Darius) the son of Achashverosh (Ahasuerus), of the seed of Madai (the Medes), which was made king over the realm of the Kasdim (Chaldeans);
9:2In the first year of his reign I Daniyel (Daniel) understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of Hashem came to Yirmeyah (Jeremiah) the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
9:3And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
9:4And I prayed unto Hashem my God, and made my confession, and said, “O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love Him, and to them that keep His commandments;
9:5We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and from Your judgments:
9:6Neither have we hearkened unto Your servants the prophets, which spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
9:7O Lord, righteousness belongs unto You, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Yehudah (Judah), and to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither You have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against You.
9:8O Hashem, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against You.
9:9To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against Him;
9:10Neither have we obeyed the voice of Hashem our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.
9:11Yea, all Israel have transgressed Your Torah, even by departing, that they might not obey Your voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the Torah of Moshe (Moses) the servant of God, because we have sinned against Him.
9:12And He has confirmed His word, which He spoke against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done upon Yerushalayim.
9:13As it is written in the Torah of Moshe, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before Hashem our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand Your truth.
9:14Therefore has Hashem watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for Hashem our God is righteous in all His works which He does: for we obeyed not His voice.
9:15And now, O Lord our God, that have brought Your people forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) with a mighty hand, and have gotten You renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
9:16O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I beseech You, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Yerushalayim, Your holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Yerushalayim and Your people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
9:17Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and cause Your face to shine upon Your sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.
9:18O my God, incline Your ear, and hear; open Your eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name: for we do not present our supplications before You for our righteousnesses, but for Your great mercies.
9:19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for Your own sake, O my God: for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”
9:20And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Hashem my God for the holy mountain of my God;
9:21Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gavri’el (Gabriel), whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
9:22And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniyel, I am now come forth to give you skill and understanding.
9:23At the beginning of your supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show you; for you are greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
9:24Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
9:25Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Yerushalayim unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and sixty and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
9:26And after sixty and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
9:27And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Daniel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
