Text (469) 608-9944Daniel, Chapter 6
Daryavesh the Madai takes the kingdom and sets Daniyel over the princes; the jealous presidents have the king sign a decree against praying to any but the king, Daniyel prays three times a day as before, is cast into the den of lions and is delivered by God’s angel, and Daryavesh decrees that all men fear the God of Daniyel.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 5:31 in most English Bibles. Verses 2–29 here are 6:1–28 in most English Bibles.
6:1And Daryavesh (Darius) the Madai (Median) took the kingdom, being about sixty and two years old.
6:2It pleased Daryavesh to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;
6:3And over these three presidents; of whom Daniyel (Daniel) was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
6:4Then this Daniyel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
6:5Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniyel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
6:6Then said these men, “We shall not find any occasion against this Daniyel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”
6:7Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, “King Daryavesh, live for ever.
6:8All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
6:9Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of Madai and Paras (the Medes and Persians), which alters not.”
6:10Wherefore king Daryavesh signed the writing and the decree.
6:11Now when Daniyel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
6:12Then these men assembled, and found Daniyel praying and making supplication before his God.
6:13Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king’s decree; “Have you not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing is true, according to the law of Madai and Paras, which alters not.”
6:14Then answered they and said before the king, “That Daniyel, which is of the children of the captivity of Yehudah (Judah), regards not you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”
6:15Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniyel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
6:16Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, “Know, O king, that the law of Madai and Paras is, That no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed.”
6:17Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniyel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spoke and said unto Daniyel, “Your God whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.”
6:18And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniyel.
6:19Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
6:20Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
6:21And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniyel: and the king spoke and said to Daniyel, “O Daniyel, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?”
6:22Then said Daniyel unto the king, “O king, live for ever.
6:23My God has sent His angel, and has shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before Him innocency was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt.”
6:24Then was the king exceeding glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniyel up out of the den. So Daniyel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
6:25And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniyel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
6:26Then king Daryavesh wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; “Peace be multiplied unto you.

6:27I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniyel: for He is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and His dominion shall be even unto the end.
6:28He delivers and rescues, and He works signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who has delivered Daniyel from the power of the lions.”

6:29So this Daniyel prospered in the reign of Daryavesh, and in the reign of Koresh (Cyrus) the Parsi (Persian).

- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.

- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Daniel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
