Text (469) 608-9944Daniel, Chapter 1
In the third year of Yehoyakim, Nevuchadnetzar besieges Yerushalayim and takes youths of Yehudah to be taught for his palace; Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el and Azaryah refuse the king’s food, thrive on pulse and water for ten days, and are found ten times better than all the magicians of the realm.
1:1In the third year of the reign of Yehoyakim (Jehoiakim) king of Yehudah (Judah) came Nevuchadnetzar (Nebuchadnezzar) king of Bavel (Babylon) unto Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and besieged it.
1:2And the Lord gave Yehoyakim king of Yehudah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shin’ar (Shinar) to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
1:3And the king spoke unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
1:4Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Kasdim (Chaldeans).
1:5And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s food, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
1:6Now among these were of the children of Yehudah, Daniyel (Daniel), Chananyah (Hananiah), Misha’el (Mishael), and Azaryah (Azariah):
1:7Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniyel the name of Belteshatzar (Belteshazzar); and to Chananyah, of Shadrach; and to Misha’el, of Meshach; and to Azaryah, of Aved-Nego (Abed-nego).
1:8But Daniyel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s food, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
1:9Now God had brought Daniyel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
1:10And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniyel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall you make me endanger my head to the king.”
1:11Then said Daniyel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el, and Azaryah,
1:12“Prove your servants, I beseech you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
1:13Then let our countenances be looked upon before you, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s food: and as you see, deal with your servants.”
1:14So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
1:15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s food.
1:16Thus Melzar took away the portion of their food, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
1:17As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniyel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
1:18Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nevuchadnetzar.
1:19And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniyel, Chananyah, Misha’el, and Azaryah: therefore stood they before the king.
1:20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.
1:21And Daniyel continued even unto the first year of king Koresh (Cyrus).

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Daniel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
