Amos, Chapter 6

Woe to those at ease in Tziyon and secure in Shomron, who lie on beds of ivory, drink wine in bowls and are not grieved for the affliction of Yosef; Hashem swears He abhors the excellency of Ya’akov, and He raises up a nation to afflict Israel from Chamat to the river of the wilderness.

Woe to them that are at ease

6:1Woe to them that are at ease in Tziyon (Zion), and trust in the mountain of Shomron (Samaria), which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!

6:2Pass you unto Kalneh (Calneh), and see; and from thence go you to Chamat (Hamath) the great: then go down to Gat (Gath) of the Pelishtim (Philistines): be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

6:3You that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;

6:4That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;

6:5That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David;

6:6That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Yosef (Joseph).

6:7Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.

I abhor the excellency of Ya’akov

6:8The Lord Hashem has sworn by Himself, says Hashem the God of hosts, “I abhor the excellency of Ya’akov (Jacob), and hate his palaces: therefore will I deliver up the city with all that is therein.”

6:9And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.

6:10And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, “Is there yet any with you?” and he shall say, “No.” Then shall he say, “Hold your tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of Hashem.”

6:11For, behold, Hashem commands, and He will strike the great house with breaches, and the little house with clefts.

6:12Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for you have turned judgment into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

6:13You which rejoice in a thing of nought, which say, “Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?”

6:14But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, says Hashem the God of hosts; and they shall afflict you from the entering in of Chamat unto the river of the wilderness.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
