2 Samuel, Chapter 2

שמואל ב ב

The men of Yehudah anoint David king in Chevron, while Avner makes Ish-Boshet king over the rest of Israel. War breaks out at the pool of Givon, and Asah’el falls.

2:1And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Hashem, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Yehudah (Judah)?” And Hashem said unto him, “Go up.” And David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “Unto Chevron (Hebron).”

2:2So David went up there, and his two wives also, Achinoam (Ahinoam) of Yizre’el (Jezreel), and Avigayil (Abigail) the wife of Naval (Nabal) of Carmel.

Vaya'al sham David vegam shetei nashav Aḥino'am haYizre'elit va'Avigayil eshet Naval haKarmeli.

2:3And his men that were with him David brought up, every man with his household; and they dwelt in the cities of Chevron.

Va'anashav asher-imo he'elah David ish uveito vayeshevu be'arei Ḥevron.

2:4And the men of Yehudah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Yehudah. And they told David, saying, “The men of Yavesh Gilad (Jabesh-gilead) were the ones who buried Shaul (Saul).”

Vayavo'u anshei Yehudah vayimsheḥu-sham et-David lemeleḥ al-beit Yehudah vayagidu leDavid lemor anshei Yaveish Gil'ad asher kaveru et-Sha'ul.

2:5And David sent messengers unto the men of Yavesh Gilad, and said unto them, “Blessed are you of Hashem, that you have shown this kindness unto your lord, unto Shaul, and have buried him.

Vayishlaḥ David mal'aḥim el-anshei Yaveish Gil'ad vayomer eleihem beruḥim atem la-Adonai asher asitem haḥesed hazeh im-adoneiḥem im-Sha'ul vatikberu oto.

2:6And now may Hashem show kindness and truth unto you; and I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing.

Ish-Boshet made king

2:8But Avner (Abner) the son of Ner, captain of Shaul’s army, took Ish-Boshet (Ish-bosheth) the son of Shaul, and brought him over to Machanayim (Mahanaim);

2:10Ish-Boshet, Shaul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Yehudah followed David.

The battle at the pool of Givon

2:12And Avner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-Boshet the son of Shaul, went out from Machanayim to Givon (Gibeon).

2:13And Yo’av (Joab) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah), and the servants of David, went out, and met them together by the pool of Givon; and they sat down, the one on one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

2:16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together; therefore that place was called Chelkat HaTzurim (Helkath-hazzurim), which is in Givon.

2:23However he refused to turn aside; therefore Avner with the back end of the spear struck him under the fifth rib, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place; and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asah’el fell down and died stood still.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tenakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Shaul (Saul)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith. It reads the passage first in its Torah setting, then with the Sages, and then with the witness of the Brit Hadashah.
