2 Samuel, Chapter 17

שמואל ב יז

Achitofel urges Avshalom to strike David that night with twelve thousand men, but Chushai talks him into gathering all Israel instead, “for Hashem had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Achitofel.” The priests’ sons carry the warning to David, hiding in a well at Bachurim; David crosses the Yarden; Achitofel goes home and hangs himself. At Machanayim, Shovi, Machir and Barzillai bring food for the king and his people.

17:1Moreover Achitofel (Ahithophel) said unto Avshalom (Absalom), “Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night;

17:2and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people who are with him shall flee; and I will strike the king alone;

Ve'avo alav vehu yagea urefeh yadayim vehaḥaradti oto venas kol-ha'am asher-ito vehikeiti et-hameleḥ levado.

17:3and I will bring back all the people unto you; the man whom you seek is as if all returned; so all the people shall be at peace.”

17:4And the saying pleased Avshalom well, and all the elders of Israel.

17:5Then said Avshalom, “Call now Chushai (Hushai) the Arki (Archite) also, and let us hear likewise what he says.”

Vayomer Avshalom kera na gam leḤushai ha'Arki venishme'ah mah-befiv gam-hu.

17:6And when Chushai had come to Avshalom, Avshalom spoke unto him, saying, “Achitofel has spoken after this manner; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.”

Vayavo Ḥushai el-Avshalom vayomer Avshalom elav lemor kadavar hazeh diber Aḥitofel hana'aseh et-devaro im-ayin atah daber.

17:7And Chushai said unto Avshalom, “The counsel that Achitofel has given is not good this time.”

Vayomer Ḥushai el-Avshalom lo-tovah ha'etzah asher-ya'atz Aḥitofel bapa'am hazot.

17:8And Chushai said, “You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are bitter in their souls, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.

Vayomer Ḥushai atah yada'ta et-aviḥa ve'et-anashav ki giborim hemah umarei nefesh hemah kedov shakul basadeh ve'aviḥa ish milḥamah velo yalin et-ha'am.

17:9Behold, he is hidden now in some pit, or in some other place; and it will come to pass, when some of them fall at the first, that whoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Avshalom.’

17:10And even he who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men.

17:11Therefore I counsel that all Israel be gathered unto you, from Dan even to Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba), as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you go to battle in your own person.

17:14And Avshalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Chushai the Arki is better than the counsel of Achitofel.” For Hashem had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Achitofel, to the intent that Hashem might bring evil upon Avshalom.

17:15Then said Chushai unto Tzadok (Zadok) and to Evyatar (Abiathar) the priests, “Thus and thus did Achitofel counsel Avshalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled.

17:16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, ‘Do not lodge this night in the plains of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people who are with him.’”

17:17Now Yehonatan (Jonathan) and Achima’atz (Ahimaaz) were staying by Ein Rogel (En-rogel), for they could not be seen to come into the city; and a maidservant went and told them; and they went and told King David.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tenakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Shaul (Saul)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Commentary
Written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective, in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith.
