Text (469) 608-99442 Kings, Chapter 2
Eliyahu and Elisha go from Gilgal to Beit El, Yericho and the Yarden; Elisha asks a double portion of his spirit, Eliyahu goes up by a whirlwind into heaven, and Elisha takes up his mantle, parts the Yarden, heals the waters of Yericho and curses the children who mock him at Beit El.
2:1And it came to pass, when Hashem would take up Eliyahu (Elijah) into heaven by a whirlwind, that Eliyahu went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2:2And Eliyahu said unto Elisha, “Tarry here, I pray you; for Hashem has sent me to Beit El (Bethel).” And Elisha said unto him, “As Hashem lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Beit El.
2:3And the sons of the prophets that were at Beit El came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, “Know you that Hashem will take away your master from your head today?” And he said, “Yea, I know it; hold your peace.”
2:4And Eliyahu said unto him, “Elisha, tarry here, I pray you; for Hashem has sent me to Yericho (Jericho).” And he said, “As Hashem lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So they came to Yericho.
2:5And the sons of the prophets that were at Yericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, “Know you that Hashem will take away your master from your head today?” And he answered, “Yea, I know it; hold your peace.”
2:6And Eliyahu said unto him, “Tarry, I pray you, here; for Hashem has sent me to Yarden (Jordan).” And he said, “As Hashem lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” And they two went on.
2:7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Yarden.
2:8And Eliyahu took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and struck the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
2:9And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Eliyahu said unto Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I be taken away from you.” And Elisha said, “I pray you, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”
2:10And he said, “You have asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so unto you; but if not, it shall not be so.”
2:11And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Eliyahu went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
2:12And Elisha saw it, and he cried, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.” And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
2:13He took up also the mantle of Eliyahu that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Yarden;
2:14And he took the mantle of Eliyahu that fell from him, and struck the waters, and said, “Where is Hashem God of Eliyahu?” and when he also had struck the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
2:15And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Yericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Eliyahu does rest on Elisha.” And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
2:16And they said unto him, “Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray you, and seek your master: lest peradventure the Spirit of Hashem has taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley.” And he said, “You shall not send.”
2:17And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, “Send.” They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.
2:18And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Yericho,) he said unto them, “Did I not say unto you, ‘Go not’?”
2:19And the men of the city said unto Elisha, “Behold, I pray you, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees: but the water is naught, and the ground barren.”
2:20And he said, “Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein.” And they bring it to him.
2:21And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, “Thus says Hashem, ‘I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.’”
2:22So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spoke.
2:23And he went up from thence unto Beit El: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, “Go up, you bald head; go up, you bald head.”
2:24And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of Hashem. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tore forty and two children of them.
2:25And he went from thence to mount Karmel (Carmel), and from thence he returned to Shomron (Samaria).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
