Text (469) 608-99442 Kings, Chapter 14
Amatzyahu reigns in Yerushalayim, strikes Edom in Gei Melach and challenges Yeho’ash king of Israel, who defeats him at Beit Shemesh and breaks down the wall of Yerushalayim; Amatzyahu is slain at Lachish and Azaryah reigns, and Yarov’am son of Yo’ash restores the border of Israel.
14:1In the second year of Yo’ash (Joash) son of Yo’achaz (Jehoahaz) king of Israel reigned Amatzyahu (Amaziah) the son of Yo’ash king of Yehudah (Judah).
14:2He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). And his mother’s name was Yeho’adan (Jehoaddan) of Yerushalayim.
14:3And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Yo’ash his father did.
14:4Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.
14:5And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the king his father.
14:6But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the Torah of Moshe (Moses), wherein Hashem commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.”
14:7He slew of Edom in Gei Melach (the valley of salt) ten thousand, and took Sela (Selah) by war, and called the name of it Yokte’el (Joktheel) unto this day.
14:8Then Amatzyah sent messengers to Yeho’ash (Jehoash), the son of Yeho’achaz son of Yehu (Jehu), king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.”
14:9And Yeho’ash the king of Israel sent to Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, saying, “The thistle that was in Levanon (Lebanon) sent to the cedar that was in Levanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son to wife’: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Levanon, and trod down the thistle.
14:10You have indeed struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why should you meddle to your hurt, that you should fall, even you, and Yehudah with you?”
14:11But Amatzyahu would not hear. Therefore Yeho’ash king of Israel went up; and he and Amatzyahu king of Yehudah looked one another in the face at Beit Shemesh (Beth-shemesh), which belongs to Yehudah.
14:12And Yehudah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.
14:13And Yeho’ash king of Israel took Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, the son of Yeho’ash the son of Achazyahu (Ahaziah), at Beit Shemesh, and came to Yerushalayim, and broke down the wall of Yerushalayim from the gate of Efrayim (Ephraim) unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
14:14And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of Hashem, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Shomron (Samaria).
14:15Now the rest of the acts of Yeho’ash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
14:16And Yeho’ash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Shomron with the kings of Israel; and Yarov’am (Jeroboam) his son reigned in his stead.
14:17And Amatzyahu the son of Yo’ash king of Yehudah lived after the death of Yeho’ash son of Yeho’achaz king of Israel fifteen years.
14:18And the rest of the acts of Amatzyahu, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?
14:19Now they made a conspiracy against him in Yerushalayim: and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.
14:20And they brought him on horses: and he was buried at Yerushalayim with his fathers in the city of David.
14:21And all the people of Yehudah took Azaryah (Azariah), which was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amatzyahu.
14:22He built Elat (Elath), and restored it to Yehudah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
14:23In the fifteenth year of Amatzyahu the son of Yo’ash king of Yehudah Yarov’am the son of Yo’ash king of Israel began to reign in Shomron, and reigned forty and one years.
14:24And he did that which was evil in the sight of Hashem: he departed not from all the sins of Yarov’am the son of Nevat (Nebat), who made Israel to sin.
14:25He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Chamat (Hamath) unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of Hashem God of Israel, which He spoke by the hand of His servant Yonah (Jonah), the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gat haChefer (Gath-hepher).
14:26For Hashem saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.
14:27And Hashem said not that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but He saved them by the hand of Yarov’am the son of Yo’ash.
14:28Now the rest of the acts of Yarov’am, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damesek (Damascus), and Chamat, which belonged to Yehudah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
14:29And Yarov’am slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zecharyah (Zachariah) his son reigned in his stead.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
