Text (469) 608-99442 Kings, Chapter 11
Atalyah destroys the royal seed, but Yehosheva hides Yo’ash in the house of Hashem six years; in the seventh year Yehoyada the priest sets the guard about the king’s son and crowns him, Atalyah is slain, a covenant is made, and the house of Ba’al is broken down.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. This chapter ends at verse 20; verse 21 of most English Bibles is 12:1 here.
11:1And when Atalyah (Athaliah) the mother of Achazyahu (Ahaziah) saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal.
11:2But Yehosheva (Jehosheba), the daughter of king Yoram (Joram), sister of Achazyahu, took Yo’ash (Joash) the son of Achazyah and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Atalyahu, so that he was not slain.
11:3And he was with her hid in the house of Hashem six years. And Atalyah did reign over the land.
11:4And the seventh year Yehoyada (Jehoiada) sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of Hashem, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of Hashem, and showed them the king’s son.
11:5And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;
11:6And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall you keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.
11:7And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of Hashem about the king.
11:8And you shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that comes within the ranges, let him be slain: and be you with the king as he goes out and as he comes in.”
11:9And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Yehoyada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Yehoyada the priest.
11:10And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David’s spears and shields, that were in the temple of Hashem.
11:11And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.
11:12And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, “Long live the king.”
11:13And when Atalyah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of Hashem.
11:14And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Atalyah rent her clothes, and cried, “Treason, Treason.”
11:15But Yehoyada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, “Have her forth without the ranges: and him that follows her kill with the sword.” For the priest had said, “Let her not be slain in the house of Hashem.”
11:16And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king’s house: and there was she slain.
11:17And Yehoyada made a covenant between Hashem and the king and the people, that they should be Hashem’s people; between the king also and the people.
11:18And all the people of the land went into the house of Ba’al (Baal), and broke it down; his altars and his images broke they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Matan (Mattan) the priest of Ba’al before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Hashem.
11:19And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of Hashem, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
11:20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Atalyahu with the sword beside the king’s house.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
