Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 7
Fire comes down from heaven on Shlomo’s offerings and the glory of Hashem fills the house; the king and all the people dedicate it with sacrifices and keep the feast, and Hashem appears to Shlomo by night, promising to hear prayer made in this place and warning what will come if Israel turns away.
7:1Now when Shlomo (Solomon) had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of Hashem filled the house.
7:2And the priests could not enter into the house of Hashem, because the glory of Hashem had filled Hashem’s house.
7:3And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of Hashem upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised Hashem, saying, “For He is good; for His mercy endures for ever.”
7:4Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before Hashem.
7:5And king Shlomo offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
7:6And the priests waited on their offices: the Levi’im (Levites) also with instruments of music of Hashem, which David the king had made to praise Hashem, because His mercy endures for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
7:7Moreover Shlomo hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of Hashem: for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar which Shlomo had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, and the meal offerings, and the fat.
7:8Also at the same time Shlomo kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of Chamat (Hamath) unto the river of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
7:9And in the eighth day they made a solemn assembly: for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.
7:10And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that Hashem had showed unto David, and to Shlomo, and to Israel His people.
7:11Thus Shlomo finished the house of Hashem, and the king’s house: and all that came into Shlomo’s heart to make in the house of Hashem, and in his own house, he prosperously effected.
7:12And Hashem appeared to Shlomo by night, and said unto him, “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place to Myself for a house of sacrifice.
7:13If I shut up heaven that there is no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people;
7:14If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
7:15Now My eyes shall be open, and My ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.
7:16For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there for ever: and My eyes and My heart shall be there perpetually.
7:17And as for you, if you will walk before Me, as David your father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and shall observe My statutes and My judgments;
7:18Then will I stablish the throne of your kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘There shall not fail you a man to be ruler in Israel.’
7:19But if you turn away, and forsake My statutes and My commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
7:20Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of My land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for My name, will I cast out of My sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
7:21And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passes by it; so that he shall say, ‘Why has Hashem done thus unto this land, and unto this house?’
7:22And it shall be answered, ‘Because they forsook Hashem God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Mitzrayim, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore has He brought all this evil upon them.’”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
