2 Chronicles, Chapter 34

Yoshiyahu, king at eight, seeks the God of David, purges Yehudah, Yerushalayim and the cities of Israel of idols, and repairs the house of Hashem; Chilkiyahu finds the book of the Torah, Chuldah the prophetess speaks Hashem’s word, and the king and people make a covenant before Hashem.

34:1Yoshiyahu (Josiah) was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) one and thirty years.

34:2And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

Yoshiyahu purges the land

34:3For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Yehudah (Judah) and Yerushalayim from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

34:4And they broke down the altars of Be’alim (Baalim) in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.

34:5And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Yehudah and Yerushalayim.

34:6And so did he in the cities of Menashe (Manasseh), and Efrayim (Ephraim), and Shim’on (Simeon), even unto Naftali (Naphtali), with their mattocks round about.

34:7And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Yerushalayim.

The repair of the house of Hashem

34:8Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shafan (Shaphan) the son of Atzalyahu (Azaliah), and Ma’aseyahu (Maaseiah) the governor of the city, and Yo’ach (Joah) the son of Yo’achaz (Joahaz) the recorder, to repair the house of Hashem his God.

34:9And when they came to Chilkiyahu (Hilkiah) the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levi’im (Levites) that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Menashe and Efrayim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Yehudah and Binyamin (Benjamin); and they returned to Yerushalayim.

34:10And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of Hashem, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of Hashem, to repair and amend the house:

34:11Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Yehudah had destroyed.

34:12And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Yachat (Jahath) and Ovadyahu (Obadiah), the Levi’im, of the sons of Merari; and Zecharyah (Zechariah) and Meshulam (Meshullam), of the sons of the Kehati (Kohathites), to set it forward; and other of the Levi’im, all that could skill of instruments of music.

34:13Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levi’im there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

The book of the Torah found

34:14And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of Hashem, Chilkiyahu the priest found a book of the Torah of Hashem given by Moshe (Moses).

34:15And Chilkiyahu answered and said to Shafan the scribe, “I have found the book of the Torah in the house of Hashem.” And Chilkiyahu delivered the book to Shafan.

34:16And Shafan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, “All that was committed to your servants, they do it.

34:17And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of Hashem, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.”

34:18Then Shafan the scribe told the king, saying, “Chilkiyahu the priest has given me a book.” And Shafan read it before the king.

34:19And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the Torah, that he rent his clothes.

34:20And the king commanded Chilkiyahu, and Achikam (Ahikam) the son of Shafan, and Avdon (Abdon) the son of Michah (Micah), and Shafan the scribe, and Asayah (Asaiah) a servant of the king’s, saying,

34:21“Go, inquire of Hashem for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Yehudah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of Hashem that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Hashem, to do after all that is written in this book.”

The word of Chuldah the prophetess

34:22And Chilkiyahu, and they that the king had appointed, went to Chuldah (Huldah) the prophetess, the wife of Shalum (Shallum) the son of Tokhat (Tikvath), the son of Chasrah (Hasrah), keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Yerushalayim in the college:) and they spoke to her to that effect.

34:23And she answered them, “Thus says Hashem God of Israel, Tell you the man that sent you to me,

34:24‘Thus says Hashem, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Yehudah:

34:25Because they have forsaken Me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore My wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.’

34:26And as for the king of Yehudah, who sent you to inquire of Hashem, so shall you say unto him, ‘Thus says Hashem God of Israel concerning the words which you have heard;

34:27Because your heart was tender, and you did humble yourself before God, when you heard His words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbled yourself before Me, and did rend your clothes, and weep before Me; I have even heard you also, says Hashem.

34:28Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same.’” So they brought the king word again.

The covenant before Hashem

34:29Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Yehudah and Yerushalayim.

34:30And the king went up into the house of Hashem, and all the men of Yehudah, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and the priests, and the Levi’im, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of Hashem.

34:31And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Hashem, to walk after Hashem, and to keep His commandments, and His testimonies, and His statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

34:32And he caused all that were present in Yerushalayim and Binyamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Yerushalayim did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

34:33And Yoshiyahu took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve Hashem their God. And all his days they departed not from following Hashem, the God of their fathers.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
