Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 32
Sancheriv king of Ashur invades Yehudah; Yechizkiyahu stops the springs, strengthens Yerushalayim and encourages the people, Sancheriv’s servants mock Hashem, and an angel destroys the camp of Ashur; Yechizkiyahu’s sickness and pride, his riches and works, the envoys of Bavel, and his death.
32:1After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sancheriv (Sennacherib) king of Ashur (Assyria) came, and entered into Yehudah (Judah), and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.
32:2And when Yechizkiyahu (Hezekiah) saw that Sancheriv was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Yerushalayim (Jerusalem),
32:3He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
32:4So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, “Why should the kings of Ashur come, and find much water?”
32:5Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
32:6And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,
32:7“Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Ashur, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there are more with us than with him:
32:8With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Hashem our God to help us, and to fight our battles.” And the people rested themselves upon the words of Yechizkiyahu king of Yehudah.
32:9After this did Sancheriv king of Ashur send his servants to Yerushalayim, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Yechizkiyahu king of Yehudah, and unto all Yehudah that were at Yerushalayim, saying,
32:10“Thus says Sancheriv king of Ashur, Whereon do you trust, that you abide in the siege in Yerushalayim?
32:11Does not Yechizkiyahu persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, ‘Hashem our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Ashur’?
32:12Has not the same Yechizkiyahu taken away His high places and His altars, and commanded Yehudah and Yerushalayim, saying, ‘You shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it’?
32:13Know you not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of my hand?
32:14Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?
32:15Now therefore let not Chizkiyahu deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?”
32:16And his servants spoke yet more against Hashem God, and against His servant Yechizkiyahu.
32:17He wrote also letters to rail on Hashem God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying, “As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Yechizkiyahu deliver His people out of my hand.”
32:18Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Yerushalayim that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.
32:19And they spoke against the God of Yerushalayim, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.
32:20And for this cause Yechizkiyahu the king, and the prophet Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) the son of Amotz (Amoz), prayed and cried to heaven.
32:21And Hashem sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Ashur. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.
32:22Thus Hashem saved Yechizkiyahu and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim from the hand of Sancheriv the king of Ashur, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.
32:23And many brought gifts unto Hashem to Yerushalayim, and presents to Yechizkiyahu king of Yehudah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.
32:24In those days Yechizkiyahu was sick to the death, and prayed unto Hashem: and He spoke unto him, and He gave him a sign.
32:25But Yechizkiyahu rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Yehudah and Yerushalayim.
32:26Notwithstanding Yechizkiyahu humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, so that the wrath of Hashem came not upon them in the days of Yechizkiyahu.
32:27And Yechizkiyahu had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;
32:28Storehouses also for the increase of grain, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.
32:29Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
32:30This same Yechizkiyahu also stopped the upper watercourse of Gichon (Gihon), and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Yechizkiyahu prospered in all his works.
32:31Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Bavel (Babylon), who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.
32:32Now the rest of the acts of Yechizkiyahu, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Yesha’yahu the prophet, the son of Amotz, and in the book of the kings of Yehudah and Israel.
32:33And Yechizkiyahu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Yehudah and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim did him honour at his death. And Menashe (Manasseh) his son reigned in his stead.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
