Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 22
Achazyahu son of Yehoram reigns one year, counselled by his mother Atalyahu and the house of Achav; he goes with Yehoram son of Achav against Chaza’el and is slain by Yehu, and Atalyahu destroys the royal seed while Yehoshav’at hides the child Yo’ash in the house of God.
22:1And the inhabitants of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) made Achazyahu (Ahaziah) his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arvim (Arabians) to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Achazyahu the son of Yehoram (Jehoram) king of Yehudah (Judah) reigned.
22:2Forty and two years old was Achazyahu when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Yerushalayim. His mother’s name also was Atalyahu (Athaliah) the daughter of Omri.
22:3He also walked in the ways of the house of Achav (Ahab): for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly.
22:4Wherefore he did evil in the sight of Hashem like the house of Achav: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.
22:5He walked also after their counsel, and went with Yehoram the son of Achav king of Israel to war against Chaza’el (Hazael) king of Aram (Syria) at Ramot Gil’ad (Ramoth-gilead): and the Arammim (Syrians) struck Yoram (Joram).
22:6And he returned to be healed in Yizre’el (Jezreel) because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Chaza’el king of Aram. And Azaryahu (Azariah) the son of Yehoram king of Yehudah went down to see Yehoram the son of Achav at Yizre’el, because he was sick.
22:7And the destruction of Achazyahu was of God by coming to Yoram: for when he was come, he went out with Yehoram against Yehu (Jehu) the son of Nimshi, whom Hashem had anointed to cut off the house of Achav.
22:8And it came to pass, that, when Yehu was executing judgment upon the house of Achav, and found the princes of Yehudah, and the sons of the brethren of Achazyahu, that ministered to Achazyahu, he slew them.
22:9And he sought Achazyahu: and they caught him, (for he was hid in Shomron (Samaria),) and brought him to Yehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: “Because,” said they, “he is the son of Yehoshafat (Jehoshaphat), who sought Hashem with all his heart.” So the house of Achazyahu had no power to keep still the kingdom.
22:10But when Atalyahu the mother of Achazyahu saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Yehudah.
22:11But Yehoshav’at (Jehoshabeath), the daughter of the king, took Yo’ash (Joash) the son of Achazyahu, and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Yehoshav’at, the daughter of king Yehoram, the wife of Yehoyada (Jehoiada) the priest, (for she was the sister of Achazyahu,) hid him from Atalyahu, so that she slew him not.
22:12And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Atalyah reigned over the land.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
