Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 19
Yehoshafat returns to Yerushalayim and is rebuked by Yehu son of Chanani the seer; he brings the people back to Hashem, sets judges in the fenced cities of Yehudah, and appoints Levi’im, priests and heads of the fathers in Yerushalayim under Amaryahu and Zevadyahu.
19:1And Yehoshafat (Jehoshaphat) the king of Yehudah (Judah) returned to his house in peace to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
19:2And Yehu (Jehu) the son of Chanani (Hanani) the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Yehoshafat, “Should you help the ungodly, and love them that hate Hashem? therefore is wrath upon you from before Hashem.
19:3Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have taken away the groves out of the land, and have prepared your heart to seek God.”
19:4And Yehoshafat dwelt at Yerushalayim: and he went out again through the people from Be’er Sheva (Beer-sheba) to mount Efrayim (Ephraim), and brought them back unto Hashem God of their fathers.
19:5And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Yehudah, city by city,
19:6And said to the judges, “Take heed what you do: for you judge not for man, but for Hashem, who is with you in the judgment.
19:7Wherefore now let the fear of Hashem be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with Hashem our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.”
19:8Moreover in Yerushalayim did Yehoshafat set of the Levi’im (Levites), and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of Hashem, and for controversies, when they returned to Yerushalayim.
19:9And he charged them, saying, “Thus shall you do in the fear of Hashem, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
19:10And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between Torah and commandment, statutes and judgments, you shall even warn them that they trespass not against Hashem, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and you shall not trespass.
19:11And, behold, Amaryahu (Amariah) the chief priest is over you in all matters of Hashem; and Zevadyahu (Zebadiah) the son of Yishma’el (Ishmael), the ruler of the house of Yehudah, for all the king’s matters: also the Levi’im shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and Hashem shall be with the good.”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
- Commentary
- Our full 2 Chronicles commentary, written for our Wednesday Tenakh study from a Messianic Jewish perspective in line with the Benei Avraham Statement of Faith, is on its own page.
