2 Chronicles, Chapter 11

Rechav’am gathers Yehudah and Binyamin to fight Israel, but Hashem sends Shema’yahu to forbid it; Rechav’am builds fenced cities in Yehudah, the priests and Levi’im cast off by Yarov’am come to Yerushalayim and strengthen the kingdom, and his wives and children are listed, with Aviyah son of Ma’achah made chief.

11:1And when Rechav’am (Rehoboam) was come to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), he gathered of the house of Yehudah (Judah) and Binyamin (Benjamin) a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rechav’am.

Shema’yahu forbids the war

11:2But the word of Hashem came to Shema’yahu (Shemaiah) the man of God, saying,

11:3“Speak unto Rechav’am the son of Shlomo (Solomon), king of Yehudah, and to all Israel in Yehudah and Binyamin, saying,

11:4‘Thus says Hashem, You shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of Me.’” And they obeyed the words of Hashem, and returned from going against Yarov’am (Jeroboam).

Cities for defence in Yehudah

11:5And Rechav’am dwelt in Yerushalayim, and built cities for defence in Yehudah.

11:6He built even Beit Lechem (Bethlehem), and Etam, and Tekoa,

11:7And Beit Tzur (Beth-zur), and Socho (Shoco), and Adullam,

11:8And Gat (Gath), and Mareshah, and Zif (Ziph),

11:9And Adorayim (Adoraim), and Lachish, and Azekah,

11:10And Tzor’ah (Zorah), and Ayalon (Aijalon), and Chevron (Hebron), which are in Yehudah and in Binyamin fenced cities.

11:11And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.

11:12And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Yehudah and Binyamin on his side.

The priests and Levi’im come to Yehudah

11:13And the priests and the Levi’im (Levites) that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts.

11:14For the Levi’im left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Yehudah and Yerushalayim: for Yarov’am and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest’s office unto Hashem:

11:15And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.

11:16And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek Hashem God of Israel came to Yerushalayim, to sacrifice unto Hashem God of their fathers.

11:17So they strengthened the kingdom of Yehudah, and made Rechav’am the son of Shlomo strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Shlomo.

Rechav’am’s wives and children

11:18And Rechav’am took him Machalat (Mahalath) the daughter of Yerimot (Jerimoth) the son of David to wife, and Avihayil (Abihail) the daughter of Eli’av (Eliab) the son of Yishai (Jesse);

11:19Which bore him children; Ye’ush (Jeush), and Shemaryah (Shamariah), and Zaham.

11:20And after her he took Ma’achah (Maachah) the daughter of Avshalom (Absalom); which bore him Aviyah (Abijah), and Atai (Attai), and Ziza, and Shlomit (Shelomith).

11:21And Rechav’am loved Ma’achah the daughter of Avshalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and sixty concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and sixty daughters.)

11:22And Rechav’am made Aviyah the son of Ma’achah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.

11:23And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Yehudah and Binyamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
