1 Samuel, Chapter 7

The ark stays twenty years at Kiryat Ye’arim in the house of Avinadav; Shmuel calls Israel to put away the Be’alim and Ashtarot and gathers them at Mitzpah, Hashem thunders against the Pelishtim, Shmuel sets up the stone Even Ha’ezer, and he judges Israel all his days.

7:1And the men of Kiryat Ye’arim (Kirjath-jearim) came, and brought up the ark of Hashem, and brought it into the house of Avinadav (Abinadab) in the hill, and sanctified El’azar (Eleazar) his son to keep the ark of Hashem.

7:2And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kiryat Ye’arim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after Hashem.

Israel returns to Hashem at Mitzpah

7:3And Shmuel (Samuel) spoke unto all the house of Israel, saying, “If you do return unto Hashem with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtarot (Ashtaroth) from among you, and prepare your hearts unto Hashem, and serve Him only: and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Pelishtim (Philistines).”

7:4Then the children of Israel did put away Be’alim (Baalim) and Ashtarot, and served Hashem only.

7:5And Shmuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mitzpah (Mizpeh), and I will pray for you unto Hashem.”

7:6And they gathered together to Mitzpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Hashem, and fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against Hashem.” And Shmuel judged the children of Israel in Mitzpah.

Hashem thunders against the Pelishtim

7:7And when the Pelishtim heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mitzpah, the lords of the Pelishtim went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Pelishtim.

7:8And the children of Israel said to Shmuel, “Cease not to cry unto Hashem our God for us, that He will save us out of the hand of the Pelishtim.”

7:9And Shmuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto Hashem: and Shmuel cried unto Hashem for Israel; and Hashem heard him.

7:10And as Shmuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Pelishtim drew near to battle against Israel: but Hashem thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Pelishtim, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

7:11And the men of Israel went out of Mitzpah, and pursued the Pelishtim, and struck them, until they came under Beit Kar (Beth-car).

7:12Then Shmuel took a stone, and set it between Mitzpah and Shen, and called the name of it Even Ha’ezer (Eben-ezer), saying, “Hitherto has Hashem helped us.”

7:13So the Pelishtim were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of Hashem was against the Pelishtim all the days of Shmuel.

7:14And the cities which the Pelishtim had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gat (Gath); and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Pelishtim. And there was peace between Israel and the Emori (Amorites).

Shmuel judges Israel

7:15And Shmuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

7:16And he went from year to year in circuit to Beit El (Bethel), and Gilgal, and Mitzpah, and judged Israel in all those places.

7:17And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto Hashem.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
