Text (469) 608-99441 Samuel, Chapter 30
David and his men find Tziklag burned by the Amaleki and their wives and children taken; David strengthens himself in Hashem, inquires by the ephod, pursues with a Mitzri servant as guide, recovers all, makes the spoil a share for those who stayed behind, and sends gifts to the elders of Yehudah.
30:1And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Tziklag (Ziklag) on the third day, that the Amaleki (Amalekites) had invaded the south, and Tziklag, and struck Tziklag, and burned it with fire;
30:2And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
30:3So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
30:4Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
30:5And David’s two wives were taken captives, Achinoam (Ahinoam) the Yizre’elit (Jezreelitess), and Avigayil (Abigail) the wife of Naval (Nabal) the Karmeli (Carmelite).
30:6And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in Hashem his God.
30:7And David said to Evyatar (Abiathar) the priest, Achimelech’s (Ahimelech’s) son, “I pray you, bring me hither the ephod.” And Evyatar brought thither the ephod to David.
30:8And David inquired at Hashem, saying, “Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them?” And He answered him, “Pursue: for you shall surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.”
30:9So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.
30:10But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.
30:11And they found a Mitzri (Egyptian) in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;
30:12And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.
30:13And David said unto him, “To whom belong you? and whence are you?” And he said, “I am a young man of Mitzrayim (Egypt), servant to an Amaleki; and my master left me, because three days ago I fell sick.
30:14We made an invasion upon the south of the Kereti (Cherethites), and upon the coast which belongs to Yehudah (Judah), and upon the south of Kalev (Caleb); and we burned Tziklag with fire.”
30:15And David said to him, “Can you bring me down to this company?” And he said, “Swear unto me by God, that you will neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this company.”
30:16And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines), and out of the land of Yehudah.
30:17And David struck them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.
30:18And David recovered all that Amalek had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.
30:19And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
30:20And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before those other cattle, and said, “This is David’s spoil.”
30:21And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he greeted them.
30:22Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, “Because they went not with us, we will not give them aught of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.”
30:23Then said David, “You shall not do so, my brethren, with that which Hashem has given us, who has preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
30:24For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goes down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarries by the stuff: they shall part alike.”
30:25And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.
30:26And when David came to Tziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Yehudah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of Hashem”;

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
