1 Samuel, Chapter 26

The Zifim tell Shaul where David is hiding, and Shaul comes after him with three thousand men; David and Avishai go down by night into the camp, take Shaul’s spear and cruse of water while all sleep, and David spares Hashem’s anointed, calls out to Avner and Shaul, and Shaul blesses him.

26:1And the Zifim (Ziphites) came unto Shaul (Saul) to Giv’ah (Gibeah), saying, “Does not David hide himself in the hill of Chachilah (Hachilah), which is before Yeshimon (Jeshimon)?”

26:2Then Shaul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Zif (Ziph), having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Zif.

26:3And Shaul pitched in the hill of Chachilah, which is before Yeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Shaul came after him into the wilderness.

26:4David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Shaul was come in very deed.

David and Avishai in Shaul’s camp

26:5And David arose, and came to the place where Shaul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Shaul lay, and Avner (Abner) the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Shaul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.

26:6Then answered David and said to Achimelech (Ahimelech) the Chitti (Hittite), and to Avishai (Abishai) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah), brother to Yo’av (Joab), saying, “Who will go down with me to Shaul to the camp?” And Avishai said, “I will go down with you.”

26:7So David and Avishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Shaul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Avner and the people lay round about him.

26:8Then said Avishai to David, “God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day: now therefore let me strike him, I pray you, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not strike him the second time.”

26:9And David said to Avishai, “Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against Hashem’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

26:10David said furthermore, “As Hashem lives, Hashem shall strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

26:11Hashem forbid that I should stretch forth my hand against Hashem’s anointed: but, I pray you, take you now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.”

26:12So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Shaul’s bolster; and they got them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from Hashem was fallen upon them.

David calls to Avner

26:13Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them:

26:14And David cried to the people, and to Avner the son of Ner, saying, “Answer you not, Avner?” Then Avner answered and said, “Who are you that cry to the king?”

26:15And David said to Avner, “Are not you a valiant man? and who is like to you in Israel? wherefore then have you not kept your lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king your lord.

26:16This thing is not good that you have done. As Hashem lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept your master, Hashem’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.”

Shaul blesses David

26:17And Shaul knew David’s voice, and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”

26:18And he said, “Wherefore does my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand?

26:19Now therefore, I pray you, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If Hashem have stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before Hashem; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of Hashem, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

26:20Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of Hashem: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one does hunt a partridge in the mountains.”

26:21Then said Shaul, “I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do you harm, because my soul was precious in your eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.”

26:22And David answered and said, “Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

26:23Hashem render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for Hashem delivered you into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth my hand against Hashem’s anointed.

26:24And, behold, as your life was much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of Hashem, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.”

26:25Then Shaul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David: you shall both do great things, and also shall still prevail.” So David went on his way, and Shaul returned to his place.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
