Tenakh Study · 1 Samuel 21:1–16

1 Samuel, Chapter 21

Yehonatan returns to the city; David comes to Achimelech the priest at Nov and receives the hallowed bread and the sword of Golyat while Do’eg the Edomi looks on, then flees to Achish king of Gat and feigns himself mad before him.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 2–16 here are 21:1–15 in most English Bibles. Verses 1–1 here are together 20:42 in most English Bibles.

21:1And he arose and departed: and Yehonatan (Jonathan) went into the city.

David at Nov

21:2Then came David to Nov (Nob) to Achimelech (Ahimelech) the priest: and Achimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, “Why are you alone, and no man with you?”

21:3And David said unto Achimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me a business, and has said unto me, ‘Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send you, and what I have commanded you’: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

21:4Now therefore what is under your hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present.”

21:5And the priest answered David, and said, “There is no common bread under my hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.”

21:6And David answered the priest, and said unto him, “Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.”

21:7So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Hashem, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

21:8Now a certain man of the servants of Shaul (Saul) was there that day, detained before Hashem; and his name was Do’eg (Doeg), an Edomi (Edomite), the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Shaul.

21:9And David said unto Achimelech, “And is there not here under your hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

21:10And the priest said, “The sword of Golyat (Goliath) the Pelishti (Philistine), whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if you will take that, take it: for there is no other save that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it me.”

David before Achish

21:11And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Shaul, and went to Achish the king of Gat (Gath).

21:12And the servants of Achish said unto him, “Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, ‘Shaul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?”

21:13And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gat.

21:14And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

21:15Then said Achish unto his servants, “Lo, you see the man is mad: wherefore then have you brought him to me?

21:16Have I need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
