1 Samuel, Chapter 16

Hashem sends Shmuel to Beit Lechem, where Yishai’s older sons pass before him and he anoints David, the youngest; the Spirit of Hashem departs from Shaul, an evil spirit troubles him, and David is brought to play the harp before him.

16:1And Hashem said unto Shmuel (Samuel), “How long will you mourn for Shaul (Saul), seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send you to Yishai (Jesse) the Beit-Lachmi (Bethlehemite): for I have provided Me a king among his sons.”

16:2And Shmuel said, “How can I go? if Shaul hear it, he will kill me.” And Hashem said, “Take an heifer with you, and say, ‘I am come to sacrifice to Hashem.’

16:3And call Yishai to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do: and you shall anoint unto Me him whom I name unto you.”

16:4And Shmuel did that which Hashem spoke, and came to Beit Lechem (Bethlehem). And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

16:5And he said, “Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto Hashem: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Yishai and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

Yishai’s sons pass before Shmuel

16:6And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eli’av (Eliab), and said, “Surely Hashem’s anointed is before Him.”

16:7But Hashem said unto Shmuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for Hashem sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but Hashem looks on the heart.”

16:8Then Yishai called Avinadav (Abinadab), and made him pass before Shmuel. And he said, “Neither has Hashem chosen this.”

16:9Then Yishai made Shammah to pass by. And he said, “Neither has Hashem chosen this.”

16:10Again, Yishai made seven of his sons to pass before Shmuel. And Shmuel said unto Yishai, “Hashem has not chosen these.”

16:11And Shmuel said unto Yishai, “Are here all your children?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep.” And Shmuel said unto Yishai, “Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.”

David anointed

16:12And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And Hashem said, “Arise, anoint him: for this is he.”

16:13Then Shmuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Hashem came upon David from that day forward. So Shmuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

David plays before Shaul

16:14But the Spirit of Hashem departed from Shaul, and an evil spirit from Hashem troubled him.

16:15And Shaul’s servants said unto him, “Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.

16:16Let our lord now command your servants, which are before you, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well.”

16:17And Shaul said unto his servants, “Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.”

16:18Then answered one of the servants, and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Yishai the Beit-Lachmi, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and Hashem is with him.”

16:19Wherefore Shaul sent messengers unto Yishai, and said, “Send me David your son, which is with the sheep.”

16:20And Yishai took a donkey laden with bread, and a skin of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Shaul.

16:21And David came to Shaul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

16:22And Shaul sent to Yishai, saying, “Let David, I pray you, stand before me; for he has found favour in my sight.”

16:23And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Shaul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Shaul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
