Text (469) 608-99441 Samuel, Chapter 12
Shmuel, now old, calls Israel to witness that he has wronged no one, recounts the righteous acts of Hashem from Moshe and Aharon through the judges, rebukes the people for asking a king, calls down thunder and rain at wheat harvest, and urges them to fear and serve Hashem.
12:1And Shmuel (Samuel) said unto all Israel, “Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that you said unto me, and have made a king over you.
12:2And now, behold, the king walks before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
12:3Behold, here I am: witness against me before Hashem, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose donkey have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.”
12:4And they said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken ought of any man’s hand.”
12:5And he said unto them, “Hashem is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that you have not found ought in my hand.” And they answered, “He is witness.”
12:6And Shmuel said unto the people, “It is Hashem that advanced Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron), and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
12:7Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before Hashem of all the righteous acts of Hashem, which He did to you and to your fathers.
12:8When Ya’akov (Jacob) was come into Mitzrayim, and your fathers cried unto Hashem, then Hashem sent Moshe and Aharon, which brought forth your fathers out of Mitzrayim, and made them dwell in this place.
12:9And when they forgot Hashem their God, He sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Chatzor (Hazor), and into the hand of the Pelishtim (Philistines), and into the hand of the king of Mo’av (Moab), and they fought against them.
12:10And they cried unto Hashem, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken Hashem, and have served Be’alim (Baalim) and Ashtarot (Ashtaroth): but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’
12:11And Hashem sent Yeruba’al (Jerubbaal), and Bedan, and Yiftach (Jephthah), and Shmuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you dwelled safe.
12:12And when you saw that Nachash (Nahash) the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said unto me, ‘Nay; but a king shall reign over us’: when Hashem your God was your king.
12:13Now therefore behold the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have desired! and, behold, Hashem has set a king over you.
12:14If you will fear Hashem, and serve Him, and obey His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Hashem, then shall both you and also the king that reigns over you continue following Hashem your God:
12:15But if you will not obey the voice of Hashem, but rebel against the commandment of Hashem, then shall the hand of Hashem be against you, as it was against your fathers.
12:16Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which Hashem will do before your eyes.
12:17Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call unto Hashem, and He shall send thunder and rain; that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of Hashem, in asking you a king.”
12:18So Shmuel called unto Hashem; and Hashem sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared Hashem and Shmuel.
12:19And all the people said unto Shmuel, “Pray for your servants unto Hashem your God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.”
12:20And Shmuel said unto the people, “Fear not: you have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following Hashem, but serve Hashem with all your heart;
12:21And turn you not aside: for then should you go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
12:22For Hashem will not forsake His people for His great name’s sake: because it has pleased Hashem to make you His people.
12:23Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against Hashem in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
12:24Only fear Hashem, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He has done for you.
12:25But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be consumed, both you and your king.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
