Text (469) 608-99441 Samuel, Chapter 10
Shmuel anoints Shaul and gives him signs, which all come to pass as Shaul prophesies among the prophets; at Mitzpah Shmuel rebukes the people for rejecting God and asking a king, the lot falls on Shaul, he is found hidden among the stuff, and the people shout for the king.
10:1Then Shmuel (Samuel) took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, “Is it not because Hashem has anointed you to be captain over His inheritance?
10:2When you are departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Binyamin (Benjamin) at Tzeltzach (Zelzah); and they will say unto you, ‘The donkeys which you went to seek are found: and, lo, your father has left the care of the donkeys, and sorrows for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?”’
10:3Then shall you go on forward from thence, and you shall come to the plain of Tavor (Tabor), and there shall meet you three men going up to God to Beit El (Bethel), one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine:
10:4And they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread; which you shall receive of their hands.
10:5After that you shall come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Pelishtim (Philistines): and it shall come to pass, when you are come thither to the city, that you shall meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:
10:6And the Spirit of Hashem will come upon you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man.
10:7And let it be, when these signs are come unto you, that you do as occasion serve you; for God is with you.
10:8And you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shall you tarry, till I come to you, and show you what you shall do.”
10:9And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Shmuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
10:10And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
10:11And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, “What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Shaul (Saul) also among the prophets?”
10:12And one of the same place answered and said, “But who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Shaul also among the prophets?”
10:13And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
10:14And Shaul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, “Whither went you?” And he said, “To seek the donkeys: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Shmuel.”
10:15And Shaul’s uncle said, “Tell me, I pray you, what Shmuel said unto you.”
10:16And Shaul said unto his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Shmuel spoke, he told him not.
10:17And Shmuel called the people together unto Hashem to Mitzpah (Mizpeh);
10:18And said unto the children of Israel, “Thus says Hashem God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and delivered you out of the hand of Mitzrayim, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you.’
10:19And you have this day rejected your God, who Himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said unto Him, ‘Nay, but set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before Hashem by your tribes, and by your thousands.”
10:20And when Shmuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Binyamin was taken.
10:21When he had caused the tribe of Binyamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Shaul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
10:22Therefore they inquired of Hashem further, if the man should yet come thither. And Hashem answered, “Behold, he has hid himself among the stuff.”
10:23And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
10:24And Shmuel said to all the people, “See you him whom Hashem has chosen, that there is none like him among all the people?” And all the people shouted, and said, “Long live the king.”
10:25Then Shmuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Hashem. And Shmuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
10:26And Shaul also went home to Giv’ah (Gibeah); and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
10:27But the children of Belial said, “How shall this man save us?” And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Samuel they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
