1 Kings, Chapter 19

Eliyahu flees from Izevel’s threat to Be’er Sheva and into the wilderness, where an angel feeds him; at Chorev Hashem passes by and speaks in a still small voice and sends him to anoint Chaza’el, Yehu and Elisha, and Elisha leaves his oxen to follow Eliyahu.

19:1And Achav (Ahab) told Izevel (Jezebel) all that Eliyahu (Elijah) had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

19:2Then Izevel sent a messenger unto Eliyahu, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.”

Eliyahu flees to the wilderness

19:3And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Be’er Sheva (Beer-sheba), which belongs to Yehudah (Judah), and left his servant there.

19:4But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, “It is enough; now, O Hashem, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”

19:5And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, “Arise and eat.”

19:6And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

19:7And the angel of Hashem came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for you.”

19:8And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights unto Chorev (Horeb) the mount of God.

The still small voice

19:9And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Hashem came to him, and He said unto him, “What do you here, Eliyahu?”

19:10And he said, “I have been very jealous for Hashem God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and slain Your prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

19:11And He said, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Hashem.” And, behold, Hashem passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Hashem; but Hashem was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Hashem was not in the earthquake:

19:12And after the earthquake a fire; but Hashem was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

19:13And it was so, when Eliyahu heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, “What do you here, Eliyahu?”

19:14And he said, “I have been very jealous for Hashem God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and slain Your prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Three to anoint

19:15And Hashem said unto him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damesek (Damascus): and when you come, anoint Chaza’el (Hazael) to be king over Aram (Syria):

19:16And Yehu (Jehu) the son of Nimshi shall you anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shafat (Shaphat) of Avel Mecholah (Abel-meholah) shall you anoint to be prophet in your room.

19:17And it shall come to pass, that him that escapes the sword of Chaza’el shall Yehu slay: and him that escapes from the sword of Yehu shall Elisha slay.

19:18Yet I have left Me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Ba’al (Baal), and every mouth which has not kissed him.”

The call of Elisha

19:19So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shafat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Eliyahu passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.

19:20And he left the oxen, and ran after Eliyahu, and said, “Let me, I pray you, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said unto him, “Go back again: for what have I done to you?”

19:21And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Eliyahu, and ministered unto him.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Kings they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 4–5 (4:21–34 there is 5:1–14 here), 18 and 20 (where a sentence is divided at a different place) and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
