Text (469) 608-99441 Kings, Chapter 1
King David grows old and Avishag the Shunamit attends him; Adoniyahu exalts himself to be king, but Natan and Bat-Sheva remind David of his oath, and David has Shlomo anointed at Gichon; Adoniyahu’s guests scatter in fear, and he takes hold of the horns of the altar until Shlomo spares him.
1:1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he got no heat.
1:2Wherefore his servants said unto him, “Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.”
1:3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Avishag (Abishag) a Shunamit (Shunammite), and brought her to the king.
1:4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
1:5Then Adoniyah (Adonijah) the son of Chagit (Haggith) exalted himself, saying, “I will be king:” and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
1:6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bore him after Avshalom (Absalom).
1:7And he conferred with Yo’av (Joab) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah), and with Evyatar (Abiathar) the priest: and they following Adoniyah helped him.
1:8But Tzadok (Zadok) the priest, and Benayahu (Benaiah) the son of Yehoyada (Jehoiada), and Natan (Nathan) the prophet, and Shimei, and Re’i (Rei), and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adoniyahu.
1:9And Adoniyahu slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zochelet (Zoheleth), which is by Ein Rogel (En-rogel), and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Yehudah (Judah) the king’s servants:
1:10But Natan the prophet, and Benayahu, and the mighty men, and Shlomo (Solomon) his brother, he called not.
1:11Wherefore Natan spoke unto Bat-Sheva (Bath-sheba) the mother of Shlomo, saying, “Have you not heard that Adoniyahu the son of Chagit does reign, and David our lord knows it not?
1:12Now therefore come, let me, I pray you, give you counsel, that you may save your own life, and the life of your son Shlomo.
1:13Go and get you in unto king David, and say unto him, ‘Did you not, my lord, O king, swear unto your handmaid, saying, “Assuredly Shlomo your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne”? why then does Adoniyahu reign?’
1:14Behold, while you yet talk there with the king, I also will come in after you, and confirm your words.”
1:15And Bat-Sheva went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Avishag the Shunamit ministered unto the king.
1:16And Bat-Sheva bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, “What would you?”
1:17And she said unto him, “My lord, you swore by Hashem your God unto your handmaid, saying, ‘Assuredly Shlomo your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.’
1:18And now, behold, Adoniyah reigns; and now, my lord the king, you know it not:
1:19And he has slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, and Evyatar the priest, and Yo’av the captain of the host: but Shlomo your servant has he not called.
1:20And you, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you, that you should tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
1:21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Shlomo shall be counted offenders.”
1:22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Natan the prophet also came in.
1:23And they told the king, saying, “Behold Natan the prophet.” And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
1:24And Natan said, “My lord, O king, have you said, ‘Adoniyahu shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne’?
1:25For he is gone down this day, and has slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Evyatar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, ‘Long live king Adoniyahu.’
1:26But me, even me your servant, and Tzadok the priest, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and your servant Shlomo, has he not called.
1:27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and you have not shown it unto your servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

1:28Then king David answered and said, “Call me Bat-Sheva.” And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
1:29And the king swore, and said, “As Hashem lives, that has redeemed my soul out of all distress,
1:30Even as I swore unto you by Hashem God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Shlomo your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead;’ even so will I certainly do this day.”

1:31Then Bat-Sheva bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, “Let my lord king David live for ever.”

1:32And king David said, “Call me Tzadok the priest, and Natan the prophet, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada.” And they came before the king.
1:33The king also said unto them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Shlomo my son to ride upon my own mule, and bring him down to Gichon (Gihon):

1:34And let Tzadok the priest and Natan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow you with the shofar (trumpet), and say, ‘Long live king Shlomo.’

1:35Then you shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Yehudah.”

1:36And Benayahu the son of Yehoyada answered the king, and said, “Amen: Hashem God of my lord the king say so too.

1:38So Tzadok the priest, and Natan the prophet, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and the Kereti (Cherethites), and the Peleti (Pelethites), went down, and caused Shlomo to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gichon.

1:39And Tzadok the priest took a horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Shlomo. And they blew the shofar; and all the people said, “Long live king Shlomo.”

1:40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

1:41And Adoniyahu and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Yo’av heard the sound of the shofar, he said, “Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”

1:42And while he yet spoke, behold, Yonatan (Jonathan) the son of Evyatar the priest came: and Adoniyahu said unto him, “Come in; for you are a valiant man, and bring good tidings.”

1:43And Yonatan answered and said to Adoniyahu, “Verily our lord king David has made Shlomo king.

1:44And the king has sent with him Tzadok the priest, and Natan the prophet, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and the Kereti, and the Peleti, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule:

1:47And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, ‘God make the name of Shlomo better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself upon the bed.

1:49And all the guests that were with Adoniyahu were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.

1:51And it was told Shlomo, saying, “Behold, Adoniyahu fears king Shlomo: for, lo, he has caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let king Shlomo swear unto me today that he will not slay his servant with the sword.’”

1:53So king Shlomo sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Shlomo: and Shlomo said unto him, “Go to your house.”

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 1 Kings they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 4–5 (4:21–34 there is 5:1–14 here), 18 and 20 (where a sentence is divided at a different place) and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
